You need to go to the part store and buy a special tool that compresses the spring inside the steering column. Don't cut corners, Disconnect the truck's battery. Without the tool you will not get the column back together. With the tool you will compress the spring, remove the clip above that dust shield. and then start to pull it apart. Remember to put everything back together how it was. That dust-cover looking thing must go back exactly how you found it or you will damage the plastic pieces to the horn circuit. When you pull the cover off for the horn be careful with the wire. Push and turn counterclockwise to remove. And you will pull out the directional lever and unscrew the little Phillips head screw from the hazard button so the turn signal Assembly can be moved so you can access the screw that locks the key cylinder in place.

How do I change the ignition cylinder on a 97 Chevy c1500 if can't turn key to on/run.

You need to remove the steering wheel , turn signal control and in the steering column you will find a pin that holds the tumblers in place for the key switch. You can remove the pin and then remove the key tumbler and replace it. Go to You Tube and they have videos on just what you need to do to remove the steering wheel and etc. Hope this helps.

why not read that first. then ask questions.

to make cars not easy to seal they make it like this,
90 to now.
it needs to be removed the whole assembly.
anti theft bolts, off, , assmbly off, may take steering wheel off too.
the hand to lock smith (just did a 91) and he
uses special smith drift pins to drive the hidden (backside away from thieves, internal lock pin, he tumbler comes out or he drills it out.
then a new pin, and holding new tumbler, and then test it , ok ,
the reversses all above.
the fsm covers this all step by step, why must you avoid books.

Key stuck in ignition -- cannot turn on or off. Can an ignition switch cause the tumbler to lock up? Or does the ignition tumbler need to be replaced? If the ignition tumbler needs to be replaced, how...

lets start simple.get a can of silacone spray oil and spray into the switch and keep moving key and you will find this will reliese the key,if you need to remove the ign switch dont panic as its a simple enough job.Forget about steering wheel and whatever, simply remove the outer plastic cover then this exposes the switch at the back of switch is a plug with wires pull it away ,then below the key you should see a tiny screw undo, and make sure the steering lock is not under pressure,ie steering wheel free, when trying to remove switch move steering wheel back/forward and switch should pull out.good luck.adrian,,,,

The key will not turn in the ignition. The

you have bent tumblers inside the lock cylinder. A replacement will be needed for this repair. The old one is unuseable since the tumblers are stuck inside and the key does not turn it no longer

Cant get key switch out of housing, on a 1974 chevy pick up.Trere are no screws or clips visible.

If you mean remove the ignition tumbler from the steering column, you will have to remove the steering wheel and lock plate, then you will need to remove the turn signal lever and screws, and then pull the turn signal switch up and out of the way, you should then be able to see the housing for the ignition tumbler down in the steering column. Look at the tumbler housing and there should be a small slot towards the end of the housing that you can put a small standard screwdriver into and depress a locking latch that is built into the tumbler. When this latch is depressed you will be able to pull the ignition tumbler straight out of the column.

yes remove the wheel, lock cylinder is wore out. with wheel off, key in on position look for a small slot looking you in the eye, put a nail file in it to release the spring tab and pull cylinder out. buy new one at auto parts store first to look at if you can youll see how to alot better they are fairly simple. good luck!
