Have tried taking the parking brake cable loose? Have you tried removing parking brake assembly? Do you have brake drums on the rear? Have you tried drum brake adjust to loosen?
You may have play in the park brake pedal due to park brake cables needing servive/repair. If you pull up on the park brake pedal when the light is on... will it go out? Another reason for this light to come on is low brake fluid. Have the level checked
Do you mean that the parking brake works when you press the pedal down but the pedal does not STAY down? If this is the case, you should look at the parking brake mechanism to make sure that the lever that releases the brake is not stuck (the release cable attaches to it - SEE PICTURE BELOW). You will have to remove the lower dash cover to do this. Sometimes the lever gets stuck in the "relaese" position when you pull the cable. Some spray lithium grease usually works well in getting it working again.
If the lever is not sticking, then the ratchet mechanism is dammaged and the pedal assembly will have to be replaced. The assembly is only attached to the vehicle with 3 bolts. It can be a little tricky getting the main cable disconnected fronm the old pedal assembly and connected to the new pedal assembly, but other than that it is not hard to change.
I too, have had problems with my '01 s10 parking brake. This brake is not like other vehicals. The regular brake pedal needs to be pressed down before the parking brake can stay down. Same with it being released. It is explained more clearly in your owners manual. Hope this helps! Please rate 4 thumbs up!
do not drive the vehicle. remove the hoze. replace it with steel line. rubber hoses are not meant for the high pressures of brake lines. it is expanding when you press the brake pedal. very unsafe.
2000 S-10: brake functions properly while pedal is held down, but when I remove my foot, the brake is released. The following is not a repair so much as a solution to the basic problem and I guess it won't pass scrutiny of any state inspection.Nevertheless, this idea may skip around the automatic pedal stop malfunction and buy you some time while a proper part replacement is arranged. The release cable ends at the ratchet assembly by the pedal and the lever which receives it can be pushed forward before depressing the pedal thereby engaging the stop which will hold the pedal down and keep the brake engaged. There is no click, or catch evident when the release lever is moved forward and it only moves a little bit. Not the easiest reach from the driver’s seat. Also, the release cable is likely to jump out of its place if you just reach blindly and push. From what I've read on this site, there are some design issues with the ratchet mechanism that commonly lead to failure of the pedal stop function. Hopefully this will help those who still want to park on a hill.
