Question about 2002 Ford SVT Focus

Open Question

Hi, we have a 2002 Fiesta 1.4 tdci diesel with 88k on the clock. It has become difficult to start on cold mornings and cuts out if we lifts off before it warms up. It is very sluggish in acceleration and will not drive at more than 70 mph. It has been checked on several different diagnostic systems yet does not return any fault codes (only checked when warm engine). When trying to start from cold it emits a cloud of grey/ white smoke while turning over and makes a lumpy, banging noise before eventually catching on and firing up. More difficult to start when fuel tank is below quarter full. Once it is warmed up it starts much easier, but the power output is very sluggish. No acceleration for overtaking and crawls up hills with foot flat on the floor. Air bubbles are visible in the fuel line. Patchy service history so don't know when fuel or air filters etc. last changed. Dual mass flywheel and clutch recently replaced. All the suggestions so far are very expensive and don't guarantee to fix the problem. Any ideas please? Thanks. Pete, Southampton, UK. pete155 Newbie Poster Posts: 1 Joined: Mon May 17, 2010 4:31 pm

SOURCE: surging while driving

DO NOT waste your money on tranny solutions!!! I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. About 2 years ago I started noticing a strange almost shaking, jerking serge type of activity when I would get into the "mid-range" (30-50) on the speedometer. I took it to a very trusted mechanic. After about $2000 and several different "tranny solutions", I thought the problem was fixed until about two week later when it suddenly jerked and sputtered AGAIN!! Don't waste your money on tranny issues. (by the way.. my van has also recently had a new tranny put into it and it STILL HAPPENS)

I had this problem once on an econoline van and it was the plantum gasket but before you change this check all the vacuum lines and get a digital volt meter and test the voltages on the mass air flow sensor and if you have to change the plantum gasket auto zone can print you out a diagram stating all you have to remove to replace it

SOURCE: ford focus 1.8 tdci MY 2003 terrible cold start

Possibly is your glow plugs, best to change then all yourself if you can with just a ring spanner and a deep seated socket. Also not enough power in battery to heat plugs up in first place can be the cause. When deisels have been started a few mins, usualy start without waiting for glow plug to go out.

Ford F250 turbo diesel cut out and died as left house this morning, cold morning. Will not start, not even a cough. Have new fuel filters, need location of the filters, anything else I should check?

if you have the 6.0 then the filters are located on top on the motor right beside your oil filter and under the drivers side on the fuel pump, check to see if you have diesel in your bowl where the fuel filter is, no diesel in there your fuel pump might be dead, check fuses to fuel pump and check relay on the passengers side kicker panel, check your owners manual

Jaguar x type 2 litre diesel. how often should the glow plugs be changed?

Hi, glow plugs does not need changing unless the vehicle struggles to start in the morning or when cold. When testing the glow plugs, they should not take longer then about 5 seconds to become red hot.

Ford 2002 f250 7.3 diesel won't start on cold mornings just replaced the cold start relay and still won't start...what else could it be?

It probably is your glow plugs which are controlled by the cold start relay. They burn out over time. This is normal. Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, part 10330, will walk you through the diagnosis and replacement easily. It's about $20. Hope this helps.
