98 Merc grand marques on cold start engine makes loud hammer tapp

98 mercury grand marques 4.6 v8 130000mi on cold start engine makes loud hammer tapping or slapping noise. Not constant but intermittent. Noise stops when serpentine is removed replaced idler pulley and tensioning pulley and had shop check a/c comp and it is ok. Also power steering pump and alt.seems ok. Could the harmonic pulley make that kind of noise? What could it be? Also when the noise happens I can see that something is locking up as the tensioning pulley arm hunts Thanks John

Yes, the balancer may be coming apart. Check the rubber between the two pieces to see if it has shifted. Also see if the belt is aligned with all the pulleys

Do you have the defrost on when it is doing this? Turn it off and see if it goes away. I'm still thinking A/C compressor.

When i put my belt back on my 98 mercury grand marques it started making squealy noise when the car is on

I am assuming your talking about the serpentine belt, you need to check all the pulleys that the serpentine belt rides on, P/S, alt. ider pulley, A/C, tensioner. water pump, if everything seems good, put the belt back on and locate where the sound is coming from, use a wood dowel to hear exactly what is squeeling.
check the power steering fluid.

Sounds like a vacuume leak, use some carb cleaner in a spray can and gently spray the engine. When you find the leak the engine will stumble, check in that area for the leak.
