You probably have a problem with the charging system. The alternator is a likely cause.

SOURCE: Charging system

change your battery cables and check all wires on the alternator for loose connections, expecially the grounds.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.

SOURCE: Electrical system shut down like battery was not

I would check my wiring harness for faulty connections and possibly burnt wires. Also trace the wires from your alternator to the battery. check them over. The battery may need to be replaced. If you let it run down alot and kept jumping it.

What could be causing a 04 ford explorer xlt to be grinding when turning left, acts like auto 4x4 trying to kick in, any ideas what the problem could be?

the problem you describe seems to be a symptom of dirt or dammage in the autolocking hub system , you will need to dissasemble to see what the cause is any further , this might be a good place to say what i allways tell my fellow 4x4 folks if your gonna drive thru Mud/sand/dirty water then make it a point to carry a jug or two of fresh water with you and after reaching clean road again use this water to flush out seals in front and behind your front tires you'll save your self a bunch of worries down the road

Grinding and clunking noise while turning in 4 wheel drive only. Ford Explorer XLT 2003

I agree w/ Dave, if u have a part time system, u should not use 4wd on dry pavement, if it's full time 4wd, there are 3 couplings that shift torque to different axles to to allow wheels to spin at different revolutions, and u should not experience the 'driveline wind-up' ,or torque bind. If u do, the system needs to be inspected for problems.

96 FORD EXPLORER XLT 4X4 LIGHT FLASHING

Does the 4x4 "actually" work because this is a signal that the system has a problem. Its like a check engine light that comes on or flashes when there is a problem with the engine or emission system.

First check your 4 wheel drive switch to make sure it works, for on an off settings. (Use a volt-ohm meter for this. On should show continuity in the readings (if digital then it should show zeros in the dial) Off should show no continuity or 1.0 in the dial.

1. Check your fuses.
2, IF OK, then check your FUSE LINKS.
3. IF OK, then check your 4 Wheel Drive relay in the fuse box.
4. IF OK, then check continuity of the wires harness to the 4 wheel drive switch for DC voltage.
