White smoke from the tailpipe is usually attributable to an engine combusting either antifreeze or water. Black smoke is caused by burning too much fuel and blue smoke is caused by burning oil...So I would say that your BMW is burning coolant of some kind. Does it smoke all the time the engine is running or just when it is cold?
Don't know what car or engine you're writing about, but I'd recommend replacing the entire engine with a good used engine. White smoke usually comes from coolant in the engine (bad head gasket or cracked block/head). Fuel additives will do nothing to correct this. Low/no compression may be a piston ring, may be a holed piston, may be broken valves. You're going to pay someone to tear down the engine and they're going to find a lot more wrong than a bad piston ring. Just get another engine.
Whatever you do, do NOT continue driving it this way until it is fixed. Hydraulic lockup can bend a piston rod ot even detonate the engne. I think it got so hot at one point that it blew a head gasket. Have a qualified mechanic perform a cooling system Pressure check. If it holds pressure, which I doubt, it may be antifreeze running into your cylinders from he intake manifold. But the pressure test should tell you which head gasket it is, but have BOTH replaced, since they both underwent the stress.AND while replacing those gaskets, a new intake gasket will be installed too, as a matter of course. The price is about the same, since they have the top of the engine apart anyway. Just for information: White "smoke" is vaporized coolant or water being pushed out the tailpipe from the engine. Blue "Smoke" is oil, and Black "smoke" is soot- too much unburned fuel.
Sounds like you may have ruined the piston rings and this is allowing oil to seep in to the combustion chamber hence your smoke. Or if it overheated when you ran out of oil it is possible that you have a bad head gasket now. Check both your coolant and oil for signs, oil will have a white froth, or darkening of your coolant.
Hope that helps you.
It's possible that the white smoke you are seeing is from coolant entering the exhaust, however, I would think that the engine would also be running rough or be difficult to start should this be the case. I would start by checking the coolant level. If the level is very low then it's possible that you have a head gasket leaking which is allowing coolant to enter a cylinder and then be forced into the exhaust where it will turn into a thick white steamy/smoke that takes a while to dissipate after it exits the tailpipe. Whatever the source or cause of the smoke is, it's possible that it could cause some serious engine damage so you should have it checked out as soon as possible.
Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck
What color smoke out of the tailpipe ? Black - running rich , too much fuel or not enough air . Blue smoke - burning oil , piston rings valve seales , white smoke could be two different thing's - coolant in the cylinders or fuel going stright through the cylinder out the tailpipe . No combustion .
Check engine light on ? Have you replaced plugs an plug wires ,air filter , any engine sensors - TPS - MAP - MAF etc.... How many miles on the vehicle ? 1988 model - engine worn out ?
