2001 Hyundai Elantra Logo
Posted on May 14, 2010

I have a 2001 hyundai elantra with automatic transmission. The transmission drops gears with no warning, gets stuck in lower gears....I have had the input and output sensors replaced....things go OK for a while, then the check engine light comes back on and the transmission starts doing weird stuff again. I have been told by our transmission guy that the problem seems to be with the connectors that connect the wires to the sensors, but that these parts cannot be purchased without buying the entire harness kit. any suggestions????

Hi there, I live in Colombia South America and I have a HYUNDAI Elantra 2001 automatic transmission and it behaves exactly like yours. I have the best mechanic guy intown and also the dealer garage take down the whole transmission and nothing changed. It seems now to be something with the electric wiring system.

I would recommend you to have the electric system checked.

Good luck.

2001 hyundai elantra goes in2 reverse but won't go backwards all other gears r perfect

Most automatic transmissions have a separate belt for reverse and all forward gears, The reverse belt is commonly lighter duty that the forward belt (some Chryslers were affected so much it was advised to not shift into reverse until the engine had warmed up and the automatic choke idled down) Thus your car would be in "reverse" but with no motion getting to the gears.

On My 2002 Hyundai Elantra after 5-10 min of driving fast and hard accelaration will downshift the transmission. What can cause that,?Check engine light is not on...

Most modern automatic transmissions have a chip in them that will prevent the car from downshifting, say, into first gear when you're moving at 60 mph. Still, I wouldn't try it. When climbing a hill, only downshift if the AT can't decide which gear to be in and switches back and forth--choose the lower one. When descending use brakes to decelerate. However, once you've braked, do use a low gear to coast in, to prevent you from freely accelerating down the hill.

Type of a/t fluid to be used

Automatic transmission :Genuine Diamond automatic transmission fluid SP-11M.

---------

For Manual transmission :SAE 75W/90 gear oil

------
To replace the fluid. There are no special requirements here. Drop the pan being careful not to damage the pan gasket with a container to catch the old fluid underneath it, replace the filter, replace the pan and then add about 4 quarts (via the dipstick hole) of the required Hyundai SP-III fluid you can get at the dealer. Double check the level with the engine warm and in park position. Be aware that your transmission uses a specific formulation of transmission fluid, available at the dealer. It is a bit more expensive than off the shelf fluid like Dextron, but you are only changing it every 30K, so the cost over time is minimal. -----------
this should help.thanks.Helpmech

How to Hyundai Elantra tow bar

Don't do it. If you tow a Hyundai on all 4 wheels, like behind an RV, the transmission will burn itself up! The manual trans requires splash lubrication for the bearing and gears, which it doesn't get because the transmission has to be in neutral. The automatic transmission burns up the one-way clutches.

2000 Hyundai elantra transmission delay, reverse going

Did you check the transmission fluid level? If necessary, add fluid. However you probably have a more serious problem. Take the car to a qualified transmission mechanic.

Tranny slips and window problem... electrical problem..related??

I think the first place you should start is by changing the fuel filter. If your fuel filter is partly plugged, it can make you think it's the transmission, when, in fact, it's actually the engine starving for fuel. It could also be your speed sensor, if the fuel filter doesn't make a difference. Good luck!
