Firing order for a 89 topaz - 1989 Mercury Topaz

The main thing is to read that check engine light code. That will give you the answer, but maybe incorrect firing order is causing it?

So check on the firing order FIRST. When changing the distributor cap, you should do one wire at a time off the old one. Same for replacing spark plugs, do one at a time. Having one lead in the wrong place is a sure fire way to get real real rough running.

Firing order should be 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 with number one being front passenger side and number 5 being front driver side.
If the firing order is off it should backfire.

there are two engine avail in this year, a 5.0 and a 5.8, the 5.0 is the most common so here is the info on that.
