I drive a 1991 Buick regal with a 3.8L the car is running very rough almost feels like a misfire. it also gets hot quick and smells strongly of exaust. the exaust also sputters out of the tail pipe now. the obd1 code it gave me was 23 for the IAT sensor. I happened to have an extra iat sensor from the junk yard but still the same issue. any ideas?

Well, the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor is located on the air intake duct between the filter and the throttle body (Assuming you have the 6L motor). The wires are easily visible at the plug that connects the sensor to the wiring harness. That's the easiest place to access them.

Hi there ... The IAT sensor is on the intake manifold, just behind the alternator. For further info on this sensor you can go to www.autozone.com. click on repair info, select your vehicle. then click on vehicle repair guides. In the product search box at the top left type in IAT and then click on the repair guide in the box that appears and it will give you more info.
Hope this helps you out

Replace the timming chain, gears, and magnet. With that cat getting that hot it has to be out of time. When the cam sensor picks up no signal, ecu can't control timming and reverts back to a preset, fixed base # .

a defective IAT will not cause a rough run, EVER.
Well the other code it gave me was 32 which has to do with the egr system. but that is no longer showing. now i just get code 23 IAT sensor and 41 cam shaft sensor which ive always had code 41
