You may have to adjust the 3 - 4 gear band, could have come off the adjustor. Have a transmission shop look into it. These band tensioners don't just come off. take it to a shop to have the auto transmission filter and fluid replacement. removing the filter they'll discover if the band holders are broken.
automatic transmissions have both band and clutch adjustments
take it to an accredited auto transmission special shop for the inspection and adjustment
Sounds like a tooth missing of the fourth gear, check trans sump for metal filings or pieces. if auto, adjust bands and check/change fluid and filters. as well.
Hello, I've dealt with two of these (Loyales) with auto trannys, and when they began to slip or lose gears, that was it! I finally did an auto-manual conversion on one...not too bad really, but you have to have the manual pedal board and the plugs don't match so I lost back-up lights. The other, I had the tranny rebuilt and it failed within 3 months. As far as I know, there is no way to tighten the bands.
sounds like the bands need adjusting and the valve body needs to be cleaned. parts store has a valve body kit but its not for faint hearted. tranny valve jobs must be done in clean organized area.other possibility is the trans-oil cooler inside radiator broke. that'll ruin tranny and cooling system. only link of tranny and heat is at trans-oil cooler in radiator
YES! But your tranny has a BAND for first gear, and clutches for 2nd, third, and if equipted, 4th. The bands are usually the cause of the "burnt smell." The foam is cause by fluid aggitation. DO NOT JUST ADD FLUID. Drain the fluid in the tranny case, and replace the filter, and the fluid. I suspect that the salvaged tranny may have a burned 1st gear band.
Ok, Clutch engagement point should be midway or just before midway in relation to total travel.(pretty much the same in any clutch vehicle) assuming that if put in lets say 1st gear, with clutch in,then engine started, when clutch is released, car does not move but there are no unusual noises (grinding from inside trans.) If this is the case, I'd first check linkage for adjustment. If OK, remove the trans and look inside for broken gears, excessive metal debris etc.If shift rails are internal it could be that shift forks are sliding on rails and failing to engage synchros.
