Car not starting - Intermittent

Intermittent problem with starting the car. The engine turns-over but it will not catch so I doubt if it is a starter-motor/alternater/battery problem. Not fuel related either, as the problem has occured at various fuel levels (last time on a full tank). This never happens first thing in the morning or when the engine has been idle for a long period of time. The problem usually happens after a journey has already been made and the car is re-started before the engine gets the chance to fully cool down (approx 30 mins - 1 hour idle time). Recent case: 10 minute journey to shopping centre, return after 45mins, car does not start. Keep trying for 10 mins, still nothing. Wait another 30-40 mins and the car starts first time. The car is 1998 Accent, 1.5 Mvi. Thank you.

Intermitten problems are the worse, when it wont start check fuel pressure with a gauge, and then check for spark, i have spent days on problems such as this, what you have to find is what is missing, fuel ,spark, is maybe coolant leaking into one or more cyls, i have seen air in the fuel system that only cause problems when under hood temp is high, open the hood and it cools enough to to start, hope this helps

Testimonial: "Thanks for replying. My initial thought is that the problem is temp related, so I will try your suggestion of leaving the bonnet open."

MY 2004 SANTA FE WILL NOT START IF GAS LEVEL IS A QUARTER TANK OR LOWER AND ALSO WHEN I FILL UP WITH GAS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON! SO NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG. ONCE IT SITS...

The Check Engine Light does not have to come on for someone to find out what is wrong. A shop may have to have the car for a few days so they can run some tests on your fuel and ignition systems. They will most likely have to drive the car/run the engine to duplicate the symptom so they can catch it while it is malfunctioning. Intermittent problems can be very elusive, but they can be diagnosed with a little patience. The level of your fuel gauge most likely has nothing to do with your starting problem.

When I go to start my car, it turns over, but doesn't immediately 'catch.' I.ve had AA look at it: he checked spark plugs, carburator, etc....he says it's overfueling and is probably the engine coolant...

You've had an experienced AA repair man look at your car and thoroughly check the obvious faults. May I ask why you doubt what he's told you? It's impossible to say he's wrong without also having a chance to examine the car.

It's definitely possible that he's correct though.

Just change the sensor: it costs peanuts, takes minutes and is easy to do, but you may need to drain the coolant down first (catch it in a clean bowl and re-use it if it's not all black or rusty as it's not cheap). When refilling the coolant set the heater control to hot to avoid air locks.

My 1990 acura integra wants to start but won't turn over. A couple of times it has started then dies. I'd keep trying to start it until it finally turns over and starts without dying. Could the fuel filter...

It's hard to know whether or not this is a fuel issue or a spark issue. Here is where I'd start:

Have a mechanic check your fuel pressure to make sure you're getting fuel. An intermittent starting issue could point to a clogged fuel filter. This would be more likely than the pump.

With the age of the car, a faulty main relay could also be the culprit. They are notoriously bad on Acuras of that age. The solder joints break and they will work one minute and not allow the car to start the next. (starter will turn the engine over but not "catch")

If this problem happens more often when the weather is hot or cold, it points toward the main relay. Good luck.

1990 Dodge Dynasty trouble starting

To be honest, sell it. You're getting in to more electronic issues than the car is worth.I can tell you the z1 circuit is shot, that's the main engine ground under the battery tray. That's just the begining of the electrical issues.

1990 190E auto turns over but doesn't ever catch

My car is a 1993 190e 2.6
For Zero dollars you should check the Over Voltage Protection fuse before spending any more money. When burnt out this thing can really cause some strange things to happen example: ABS light on, low rough idle speed, difficult or no starting without a "jump". My battery was new, the starter and alternator were fine. I was Lucky enough to know an expert he took one look at it swaped that fuse and all was good. Immediatly good idle, ABS light went out, Car starts great.
Check it first!
By the way you can change the brushes on your starter with out even removing it from the car.
