Need a wiring diagram/picture for the start solenoid on a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L automatic. There are 2 fusible links, the positive battery cable and two other wires. 4 wirese come out of the harness that attaches to the radiator fan shroud, 1 wire comes from the wire harness above the starter (from the top of the engine) and the final wire is the positive batter cable. There isn't one. The alternator is a generator of electricity, not a user or power.

Check the starter connections for a corroded/blown fusible link.Pull on the wires attached there and if one pulls apart easily,it's defective.

On the positive side of battery Julie is where your fusible links are,you say it's getting hot,I would follow all wires,look for burnt or swollen wires,they go to starter.Here's a wiring diagram,it shows that you have 3 fusible links leaving your positive battery,they need looking at,check all wiring in line with positive battery cable.Look at diagram number 25,enlarge to see.

There is a fuse from the ignition switch. There is also a fusible link. Below is a wiring diagram that you can look at and it has the wire colors as well. This I hope will help you narrow down your power loss to the solenoid. you could have a bad fusible link or a broken wire to the starter or a bad starter or a bad neutral safety switch check for power at the starter with the key in start position if no power bad fusible link if power then check solenoid in starter if the solenoid is good then id have to say neutral safety switch

The wires and the fusible links at the starter should be checked, and you will know a bad fusible link wire when you find one, because they will stretch like a rubber-band, and repair any fusible link wire that you find that are burned out.

If you can not find any problem with the wiring or fusible links at the starter, then check the "start" fuse for the starter field wire, (if it has one it will usually be located out in the fuse/relay junction box) also the starter field wire should be connected to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid and it will be "hot" or have power to it only when the key is in the "start" position, and if the field wire to the starter is the wire that burned up then the ignition switch itself might have been damaged.

on your starter solenoid , looking at the schematics , you have a purple wire going to the "S" terminal (hot only in the start position) , and on the bigger stud/lug "B" terminal , you have a big red cable going straight to the battery and also on that same big stud/lug you have another smaller wire that is a fusible link to the altenator , so when you say the red wire to starter in not getting any power , are we talking about the big battery cable or the smaller purple wire ? if the purple wire is not hot in the start position , it goes from the starter "S" to the nuetral saftey switch and then to the ignition switch . we didn't put the fusible link wire on the "S" terminal and the purple on the "B" terminal did we ? this is getting long so i will stop here and wait for comment.

Being that you don't hear the starter click would lean me towards the starter solenoid.

If you have a auto parts store in town, you can probably pull the starter off, and take it to them to test. (the solenoid is a separate piece from the starter).

Then it's time to bring out the 12v circuit tester.
Look to see where you have power going to, and where you don't have power going to.

It could be starter related, it could also be that your ignition switch has gone south. The circuit tester will tell you that by checking for power getting through the circuit.

There is also a thing called a fusible link. A fusible link acts like a BIG fuse, but it's just a piece of wire (it's off the battery post) if the ends on the fusible link have gone bad, it will act the same as a blown fuse, but the fusible link is still good. Here again, it's something that can be tested with a $5 circuit tester.

So, test the starter, test the solenoid, then start looking for electrics that "dead end".

Yes, the Cavaliers are good little cars. If it is running the 2.2 4cyl it's a pretty bullet proof motor. They used it in thousands of vehicles.

When the starter was tested I assume the solenoid was tested also. There is a fusible link going from the ignition to the solenoid. It’s the wire with a larger plastic block on it.
