My outback 2.5 liter has code 0336 i replaced the Crankshaft sensor that didnt fix problem. Problem is engine cugs between 2,000 and 3,000rpms and will not run steady at concistant rpm. I have replaced spark plugs, wires and fuel pump. I can not find any problems with wiring harness but can not get rid of the code not sure what else i can check to correct code

fuel injectors getting ground from pcm?

Ok, well I doubt very much that changing the engine would cure all of the faults. If say a piston had gone bad ( and they have been known to without warning) it would not cause all of the fault codes to read. I would start checking all of the wiring connections especially the earth wires as the early Subarus did not have very good wiring. Also check to make sure no water has got into the fusebox area.

when you replaced the plugs , was one of them (cylinder 1 ) dirty and fouled ?
I'm thinking that bad rings in cylinder would give you low compression , and eventualy cause the missfire by fouling up the plug.
There is an inexpensive product that will help with the compression by filling up scratches in the cylinder walls. It is called Restore , and it is one of the only products of its type that I have used , and feel actually works.
Unfortunately , if your rings are broken , or badly worn , nothing in a bottle will fix them.
If your car had a distributor cap and rotor , I would change them too.

This code is associated with the EVAP system which includes, but not limited to gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valves. The EVAP system is supposed to prevent fuel vapors from escaping the fuel system
If you have this code, one of the following may have happened:
Gas cap not installed properly or faulty gas cap
Purge solenoid has failed
Canister is plugged and not working properly
This code can be tricky to resolve, but try some of these:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap and or replace the gas cap and clear the code and see if it comes back
Inspect the the hoses, and tubes for any sign of a hole or cut
Inspect for damage or disconnected hoses around the purge solenoid
Check and or replace the sensor
Check and or replace the purge valve

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.
