I need to know if the TPS in my 2006 Ford Fusion SEL, can be replaced on my own, or does it need to go to a dealer to be replaced?
The TPS is an easy part to replace. It has 2 screws and 1 electric connector. It is about the size of a butane lighter and attaches to the metal airhorn.
There is only a slight adjustment possible for this part. One end has an elongnated slot for the screw. Just look at where the old part was adjusted and replace it that way. The only thing you need to watch is aligning the slot on the throttle shaft with the indentation on the TPS.
While you are replacing the part, disconnect the battery on the POS cable and this will reset the "check engine" light on the dash. Then reconnect and drive your car.
You can do it yourself. Then get the code cleared out of your computer. The new one may not work until you do that.

Thank you for your response. I have one more question. How do I clear the code out of the computer? And, where do I get the code?
Thanks again.
Thank you soo much for your help and advise. I will keep you up to date on the progress. It sounds simple to replace. Thank you again.
The reason I am thinking that it is the TPS is because I put in a new battery last night.
Started the car and it did not idle like it normally would. I hit the gas and it would not idle like it normally does. The guy at Autozone is the one that said it might be the TPS. Now I did drive the car home, but at 6 miles and hr. Could not go any faster. Drove in first gear all the way home. It acted like it was not getting any gas. Could it be that I need to reset the computer or that it really is the TPS? Thanks again for your help.
