95 Lincoln Town Car: Engine Makes Loud Tapping Noise
I have a 95 Lincoln Town Car lately the engine has been making a loud ticking noise. We thought it was the timing chains but nothing is wrong with them does anybody know wat it could be???
yes and we took the timing chain cover off to see if it was loose but they were both on tight, so now my dad thinks its the valves making the ticking noise but we are not sure because we're not familiar with the engineyes and we took the timing chain cover off to see if it was loose but they were both on tight, so now my dad thinks its the valves making the ticking noise but we are not sure because we're not familiar with the engine

You had the engine disassembled to check the chains? You had the engine disassembled to check the chains?

It has to be internal. Is it your valves or a slapping piston? (Sorry but internal engine problems are hard to diagnose without tearing down the engine)

I suggest you have your car checked as soon as possible - while a rattling exhaust isn't desperately urgent it could be the cat breaking up which might later restrict the flow of gases. Most importantly excessively loose timing belts or chains tend to make most noise when the engine is idling. If the noise is being caused by this delay could be very expensive.

One of my vehicles started making a rather disturbing sound so I went to investigate and to hopefully fix it.
Drain oil and install correct amount, sounds like a lifter noise clicking sound not to loud just a steaddy tick, when you rev up gits faster right.....
A loud knocking noise like you've described if it's in the lower end of the engine, is usually a Crankshaft Rod Bearing. If the knocking noise is in the top end of the engine, it is usually a lifter or a rocker arm. Either one doesn't sound good and can be expensive. You can continue driving until it stops completely or you can do as the autozone suggested and use an oil thickner such as STP although none of them work very long or quiet them down for long.
You have a bad lifter if left unattended its starts by" ticking" then "tapping" then eventually ceases up!! The fix..... Have a compression test done on each cylinder and pull valve cover off and replace ticking lifter or u might just get lucky and adjust it... Until then ..... A heavier weight oil will quiet it down...Not a fix tho......
might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard

no I adjust tension at 250000 miles it now has 500,000 miles
