Egr valve is a major concern in these cars as mazda havent got this issue sorted. The light will come on and go off itself. No need to worry about it. I have had mine coming on and off more often that the blinking xmas decorations. Got the valve cleaned first few times but no luck. I had it blanked out on AAs advice as this valve does not do anything to the engine and is not necessarily required. My car even passed MOT with the EGR Valve blanked out. hope this helps

Slowing down to go up hill hard to press the gas

Your catalytic converter sounds like its clogged...When clogged it restricts exhaust and puts excessive back pressure on motor causing loss of power ,especially when engine is under load.(going up hill).ONE WAY TO SEE IF THIS IS THE PROBLEM IS TO LOOK UNDER VEHICLE WHEN PROBLEM OCCURS...tHE EXHAUST PIPE BEFORE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WILL BE GLOWING DUE TO RESTRICTION....
