I HAVE A 1988 CHEVY VAN G20 5.7 I CHECKED TIMEING CHAIN NEW PLUGS,PLUG WIRES,DIST CAP, ROTOR,COIL,FLUSHED FUEL TANK,NEW FUEL PUMP AND FILTER I HAVE GOOD FUEL PRESSURE,GOOD COMPRESSION,THE PROBLEM IS SPARK, I TAKE THE COIL WIRE OFF DIST CAP AND HOLD IT CLOSE TO THE TERMINAL AND IT STARTS DOESNT RUN WELL BUT RUNS IF I PLUG IT INTO THE TERMINAL IT WONT START AT ALL. ITS A RESISTANCE PROBLEM BUT WHERE DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT COULD CAUSE IT

What's missing ? Fuel ,spark , compression ? How many miles on the vehicle ? Does it have spark , pull a plug wire while cranking an hold it near a good ground . Put a fuel pressure gauge on the vehicle , is there fuel pressure ? Do a compression test , 150 psi . engine mechanical problem . timing chain .

could be your coil, but can also be internal, have you replaced both the air & fuel filters ? if so, dump some good fuel injector cleaner into tank when half empty , top off with 91-92 octane fuel, see how that works for you, do some highway driving, stop & go traffic creates problems, todays fuel w/ethonal is bad for older cars, be sure to have code cleared from ecm !

Check all the sensors

ADVANCE AUTO HAS A MACHINE TO TEST MODULES.. BUT IF I WENT THROUGH THE HASSTLE TO REMOVE IT I WOULD REPLACE IT..YOU ARE DOING WHAT IS CALLED SHOTGUN REPAIR..REPLACING PARTS ON A GUESS..NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE MISSING SPARK,,, FUEL,, COMPRESION...GET BACK WITH ME

Start with fuel system. Listen for fuel pump humm at fuel tank No humm check wiring to pump for power. Then check for spark at plugs and wires. Remove wire from coil and hold near engine and see arch when you crank. No arch. Replace ignition Modular inside distributor cap or cap or rotor

THESE HAVE A SPIDER INJECTOR SYSTEM THA HAVE ALOT OF ENTERNAL LEAKS THAT CAUSE MISFIRES..

ohm test plug wires, check cap and rotor. anything out of spec replace

replace carbutator and get it profesional tunned

before you drop tank again, check fuses & relay.then disconnect fuel line @ filter turn key to on position should hear fuel pump run and get gas stream out of line. if no flow from line new pump faulty be sure & remove negative battery cable first good luck.

1 Inspect Battery Damaged or faulty battery and/or connections. here is a list of things u can check hope this helps Shaun 2 Inspect Coil - Ignition Damaged or faulty ignition coil or ignition coil circuit. 3 Inspect Fuel Filter Clogged or dirty fuel filter 4 Inspect Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator Faulty fuel injector pressure regulator or circuit. 5 Inspect Fuel Pump Improperly functioning fuel pump or circuits. 6 Inspect Wireset Damaged, worn, or deteriorating spark plug or coil wire(s). 7 Inspect Control Module-Ignition Faulty ignition control module or circuit. 8 Inspect Solenoid Switch Damaged or faulty solenoid switch or solenoid switch circuit. 9 Inspect Starter Damaged, worn, defective, or faulty starter or starter related circuit. 10 Inspect Neutral Safety Switch Damaged or faulty neutral safety swittch or circuit. 11 Inspect Fuse Corroded, burned, or shorted fuse may be interupting power source. 12 Inspect Fusible Link Corroded, burned, or shorted fusible link may be interupting power source. 13 Inspect Battery Cable Corroded, broken or poorly connected battery cable. 14 Inspect Spark Plug Wire Loom - Performance Improperly adjusted or worn/malfunctioning carburetor. 15 Inspect Distributor Cap Loose or cracked distributor cap 16 Inspect Distributor Cap And Rotor Kit Loose, cracked, or worn distributor cap and ignition rotor. 17 Inspect Fuel System Pressure Incorrect fuel pressure being delivered to carburetor or fuel injection system. 18 Inspect Fuel Injector Plugged, dirty or poorly connected fuel injector. 19 Inspect Ignition Switch Worn, damaged or faulty ignition switch or circuit. 20 Inspect Spark Plug Fouled, damaged or broken spark plug(s). 21 Inspect Belt Incorrectly routed, adjusted(tensioned), missing or worn drive belt(s). 22 Inspect Timing Belt Slipped or broken timing belt. 23 Inspect Timing Set Slipped timing chain or worn timing gear(s). 24 Inspect Fuel Tank Contaminated fuel from rusted or deteriorated fuel tank. 25 Inspect Ignition Timing Incorrectly adjusted engine timing.
