The brake light does not turn on even after replacing with a new one

All vehicle brake lights use a switch to determine if the lights are on or off. This switch, known as a stoplight switch, consists of a plunger-style button that breaks and completes a circuit. When the brake pedal is pressed, the plunger comes outward, completes the circuit and the lights turn on. There are several faults that can make your brake lights stay on. The circuit may go bad and remain completed, or the rubber stopper on the brake pedal stalk could fall off or come apart. If nothing is keeping the plunger pressed in, the circuit remains open.

Brake lites wont go off

There is a little switch on the very top of your brake pedal. On most vehicles it has a plastic "stopper" (whatever you may call it) that is supposed to press the switch. After some time, it will crumble, and your brake lights will remain on, all the time!

My back lights won't turn off on my toyota tercel

  • Push the driver's seat as far back as possible, allowing you to lay on the floor on the driver's side.
  • 2 Shine a flashlight at the top of the brake pedal stalk and find the stoplight switch. It will be a plastic cube either connected to the brake stalk or directly opposite the brake stalk, depending on the vehicle.
  • 3 Depress the brake pedal and feel where the brake light switch contacts the stopping plate, a metal plate in direct line with the stoplight switch.
  • 4 Feel for an open hole where the stoplight's plunger-style button presses. If a hole is present, you simply need to replace the rubber stopper.
  • 5 Press and release the plunger-style button on the brake light switch and ask an assistant if the brake lights are turning off and on. If not, the switch is bad and must be replaced.
Stoplight Switch Stopper Replacement
  • 1 Clean out any remaining debris left behind by the old stopper from the hole that the stopper goes into.
  • 2 Press the new stopper into the hole on the metal plate until it snaps into place.
  • 3 Shine the flashlight on the stopper and check that it sits flush against the metal plate.
  • 4 Press and release the brake pedal and ask your assistant if the brake lights are turning off and on.
  • 5 Replace the stoplight switch if the lights continue to stay on.
Stoplight Switch Replacement
  • 1 Loosen and remove the bolts holding the stoplight switch in place. It could be between one and four bolts depending on the vehicle.
  • 2 Pull the stoplight switch from its mount. Disconnect the wiring harness from the stoplight switch by pressing or pulling the locking tab and puling the harness away from the switch.
  • 3 Plug the wiring harness into the new switch until the locking tab clicks into place.
  • 4 Place the new switch on the mount the old switch was removed from and tighten the bolts with a ratchet and socket.
  • 5 Press and release the brake pedal several times and have your assistant check for proper operation.

MY BRAKE LIGHTS WONT SHUT OFF EVEN AFTER THE CAR IS OFF AND KEY IS REMOVED NO EMERGENCY BRAKE ON EITHER

This sounds like a bad brake light switch, look at the brake pedal on the arm of the pedal you will see a switch thats the brake light switch, it may be bad. some of these cars use a rubber stopper on the arm to make contact with the switch and i have seen where the rubber has worn and poped off and this leaves a gap and it will act like the pedal is pushed because of the space left there, if the arm is pushing the switch then thats not the problem and i would say switch is bad

The brake lights are stuck "on", even when car is not running. Pulled up on brake pedal and didn't help, nothing obstructing pedal. Any ideas?

generally a plastic stopper on the other side of brake light switch, they crumble, check that other wise disconnect brake pedal switch cause it might be jammed. brake pedal switch is under the dash where the top of the brake pedal bottoms out.

My 1998 ford explorer, i replaced the lift gate with a new one and now the door ajar light wont go off and niether will the interior lights? What do i do?

There is a small rubber stopper on your old door that used to push the button to turn off the lights, and signal the door is closed. It sounds as if your new door is missing the rubber stopper.

Why would the rear lights stay on when the car is turned off?

Either you have a bad brake light switch, or your stopper for the brake light switch is missing. Check where the brake light switch contacts the brake pedal. If there is a hole, you are missing the stopper, if not you need a switch.

Car brake lights won t turn off when car is shut down 1996 Honda Odyssey

It should be your brake light switch. There is a little plate welded to the arm of the pedal that has a hole with a rubber stopper. The rubber stopper is most likely missing, or damaged. You should be able to take a flashlight and see the plate and the switch. If the hole is plugged up, you will need the brake light switch, if not, replace the plug.

Looks like pressing on brake lights all the time

Look under the dash. From the brake pedal pad follow the lever that the foot pad connects to. You will see an electrical switch with a push button. Try to push on the button and have an assistant see if the brake lights go off. If it does, the switch is ok. If the push button sticks into a hole on the pedal lever, your brake switch rubber stopper is missing. Its a small rubber button about the size of a dime. ( You may notice broken pieces on your drivers carpet) Get a new one from your Honda dealer and stick it in the hole, It should contact the brake switch button and turn off the brake light.

Brake light switch staying on flattening battery

The switch is located above the brake pedal, about six inches. Sometimes there is a rubber stopper attached to the brake pedal assembly that closes the switch. If it is missing, nothing pushes the switch. Put a small bolt through the hole with a nut.
