Turn on the headlights. If they're nice and bright, try the horn. If the horn sounds o.k. the battery is probably o.k. Locate the starter under the motor. Find a spot on the side of the starter that you can hit with a hammer. Have somebody turn the key while you hit the starter with the hammer. If it starts, you need a new starter. You can only do this a couple of times before it won't work at all.
i am a tech at a ford dealership. it sounds like you have a short some wheres around your steering column that maybe what we call "backfeeding" to other systems. the area where the tilt is on the steering column is a good place to check. also remote starters can cause alot of havoc on a vehicle.
Could be an electrical problem. Clean your battery connections. Sounds like you are not getting voltage to the ignition coil. Check fuses. Check if horn, wipers, turn signals are working. Try this test: turn on headlights and then turn ignition key to start. The headlights should dim if the starter solenoid is engaging. You did not mention if it is manual or automatic transmission but most cars have an interlock switch that prevents the car from starting if it is in gear.
Troubleshoot the starter. If your battery is good, then you WILL have power...the lights will work, horn, etc, but....if the starter is toast...you need a starter.
After checking the battery connections, turn on the headlights and blow the horn. If the horn sounds sick, charge the battery. If ok, then remove the starter and clean the bellhousing where it mounts as this is where it is grounded. Frankster016
