I have a 1996 Toyota Camry. the engine light

This indicates that your car's computer has stored a code indicating where it has detected some problem. Many of these problems are minor. The code can be read out by any car mechanic, or in the USA, Autozone. You can extract the code as well yourself, by bridging 2 terminals in the car's engine bay, see here p296

The check engine light means there is a trouble code stored in the car's computer. The first thing is to know what that is telling you. Then you can go more directly to the trouble spot, like for instance the Idle Air Control valve, a possible culprit.
Depending on where you are, there are places like Autozone that will extract the code for free. Also you should be able to do it yourself by bridging terminals TE1 and E1 with a bit of wire, according to this, p296

where is the ADL linkage located on a 1992 Toyota Camry. its inside of door frame its a obd 1 have codes pulled for free at auto parts store get code and look it up for the problem happy holidays

On my 2006 you set the odometer to the normal odometer mode using the button on the dash. When you get that setting, hold the button down until the display flashes. Once it begins to flash, let go of the button and then push it again. The light should then go out.

Getting the codes would certainly help. If the light is on, and no codes stored... Then it is definately the airbag ecu under the dash in front of the console. Very common
