Getting a check engine light on a 2002 Dodge for P0440
Getting a check engine light on a 2002 Dodge Durango with a Fault code P0440 Evap system malfunction and sometimes it comes along with a P0441 Code also. Engine is the 4.7 liter V8. So far the purge control valve, gas cap, vacuum leak detection pump have been changed and we still get the code. Erase the code and it's back in 24 to 48 hours. All winter the light stays off, but as soon as weather gets warm it's back again. The vehicle has been smoke tested for leaks too. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.
Apologies... didn't see that the gas cap had already been replaced. I've replaced mine as well, and had a shop replace a couple of lines that were cracked. My check engine light still comes on intermittantly, but usually after filling up the tank if I don't get the gas cap tightened down "past 3 clicks"
Look for any cracks in the hoses and lines that run from the gas tank to the solenoid under the hood.Apologies... didn't see that the gas cap had already been replaced. code is a malfunction with the EVAP system. check the things below. bad gas cap, leaking fuel tank, charcoal canister is broken, faulty vent control valve, bad canister purge valve or loose or broken hose (EVAP) Good luck Mike L.
code po440 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system--malfunction ===causes --hose connections --intake leak--EVAP canister purge valve
code p0441 refers to EVAP system--incorrect flow detected===causes---hose connections --intake leak--EVAP canister purge valve.
once you fix the fault use a scanner to reset the engine light.
code p0440 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP)system malfunction===causes--hose connections--intake leak--EVAP canister purge valve. Check all hose connections and replace the canister purge valve.. If you can locate the unit you should be able to replace it yourself
first thing, disconnect your battery and clear the code. before restarting check and make sure the gas cap is tight, should click at the least 3 times. if the light comes back on check the rubber lines that connect to the filler tube and make sure they aren't dry rotted and cracking. if their are no visible issues with the lines then it is a possibility the evap canister is bad. best bet is to take it to a shop or dealer and let them run a smoke test on the system, only after you check the gas cap.
it is VERY common for the gas cap seals to go bad and cause an EVAP leak that generates a code.. i have seen alot of this in recent years, these cars now have pressurized systems....good luck! it could be a quick and cheap repair!
his is an Evap sytem fault code. I have seen this problem with old gas caps not sealing correctly, restricted egr and evap canisters. The dealer can smoke test the system for around 50 bucks, but usually the parts can be cleaned (egr) or replaced (vacuum line).
