Tightening the handbrake

I'm having troubles with the hand brake on my T reg Nissan Primera estate. I have adjusted the Handbrake adjuster bolt, next to the hand brake arm to as tight as i can and the hand brake is still not tight enough when its on. Please can you advise me how do i adjust it more so the hand brake is tighter when on?

The first thing to do is to slacken the handbrake adjuster on the lever off completely.then if you have rear drum brakes remove the drums and make sure that the handbrake levers on the shoes are not siezed and are returning to the stops plus that the auto adjusters are not siezed if not free them off so they are using wd40 or whatever and the linings/drums are ok then reasemble and pump the brake pedal a few times to let the auto adjusters work then readjust the lever to about 5 to 7 clicks if you have got rear discs then one off the rear calipers may have siezed or both handbrake cables should also be checked for being siezed

SOURCE: Red Brake light comes on when driving (not handbrake light)

Possibly the brake fluid level low inside the master cylinder so when you brake the fluid moves inside and the contact is made when the fluid moves to the one side of the reservoir, could also be the brake booster that is faulty. Some vehicles were equiped with a sensor that conects up to the booster which monitor the vacuum inside the booster and if the vacuum is very low it switches the same light on as the hand brake. Everything is conected in the same circuit. Hope it will help

SOURCE: Handbrake light stays on for a while

The Brake light usually also warns of low brake fluid in your brake master reservoir. Have you checked the level?

SOURCE: how to fix s14 handbrake

You've got to replace your rear calipers. I say "calipers" because one is hanging up but they should be changed as pairs. Thanks, Dana P.S. It's more likely the calipers than the cables 90% of the time.

How do I adjust the handbrake on 2003 Kia Carnival

I have not checked a kia carnival but worked on most kia cars. There are two hand brake adjustments. One is at the hand brake lever. open up the hand brake cover and look for the nut adjuster where the end of the hand brake cable is attached to. Tighten up that nut until you find a comfortable hand brake position and the brakes locks.

the other adjustment is found at the rear brake drums. you have to remove the tires and tighten the adjusting nut behind the brake plates. there is a small hole, usually covered with a rubberized plug. remove that plug and adjust the brake with a flat screwdriver.

Adjusting hand brake

there is a cable adjuster under the center console if its got a rear ashtray just pull that out and look there.but you should remove the rear brake drums and check the shoes. and the handbrake fulcrum levers, they can sieze up. also make sure the levers return to the stops with handbrake off and the auto adjusters are working ok before adjusting the handbrake cable! it helps brake performance if you give the auto adjusters a bit of a tweak before putting the drums back on. manually adjust 3-4 clicks or until the drum goes back without binding.

My handbrake needs adjusting in my Toyota Corolla 1994. Can u please explain how this adjustment is done.

Hello, My usual Brands are Ford products, but Foreign cars usually use simple, less expensive ways to do things. Assuming the brake pads are good, there should be a cable connected to the handbrake. You would usually pull the handbrake up to engage about 1/4 the way to engagement and lock it there.
Then you would go underneath the car and find the cable that stretches from the handbrake lever to a juction with a second cable. There should be an adjusting thread somewhere at this intersection.

With the rear wheels off the ground, you would tighten the nut on the threads of the handbrake cable until you hear rubbing in the rear brakes. Then get inside the car and pull back on the handbrake lever and you should not be able to move the rear wheels with the handbrake set. You then release the handbrake 100% and the rear wheels should turn mostly without noise.

Now if you can not find an adjustment nut under the car, it is possible the handbrake adjustment nut is under the handbrake cover/boot inside the car. Still use the same process of setting the lever 1/4 engaged and tightening the threaded cable until the rear wheels start dragging.

I hope this helps you.

WHEN ON A VERY HIGH INCLINE, SUCH AS THEY HAVE AT DRIVERS TESTING GOUNDS, MY HANDBRAKE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, IT LETS THE CAR RUN BACK, WHAT SORT OF ADJUSTMENT DO YOU DO AND HOW?

There is an adjuster on the hand brake cable, just locate the cables under the car, you will see the adjuster. Some models have the adjusters on the brake lever and they are adjusted inside the car, under the boot over the brake lever. Your automatic rear brake adjuster should have taken up any wear on the brake linings, so there must be considerable stretch in your cable. You need to shorten the cable, tightening on the adjustment turnbuckle after loosening the lock nut. You will probably need two 10 mm spanners and a pair of pliers to hold the cable adjustment bolt.

Adjust handbrake on nissan terrano

On the inboard side of the rear wheel hubs, you will find an oval rubber plug, pry this plug out, to gain access to the brake adjuster.
Pull the handbrake up two clicks.
Jack and support. Remove the rear wheel, and adjust the brake using a screw driver levered through the slot to turn the notched wheel of the adjuster, until the hub starts to drag when rotated by hand. Repeat for the other side. Note the ratchet mechanism on the adjuster will only let it turn one way.

Toyota yaris

The handbrake adjustment is at the handbrake. Pull off the rubber boot around the hand brake. (it pulls open at the botto of the handle and slips off over it). Next locate the 10mm bolt under the rear cup holder (there may be a little felt in there covering it). Remove the bolt.

Lift the console at the rear, it should pop loose at the front and lift up. You should have clear access to the adjustment bolt. Loosen the 10mm locking nut and this should allow you to adjust the cable.

Turn the adjustment clockwise to tighten the cable and once adjusted, re-tighten the locking nut. Reverse the whole process to put the console etc back together.
