What have you run so far for diagnostics? What is the history on your car? Such as repairs, maintenance, tune-ups, and so on. Usually back-firing and stalling would be related some type of engine drive-ability issue. Such as: engine timing, overdue tune-up (worn out components),a problem with electrical and/or charging system, or maybe a clogged CAT.

Check the color of the catylictic convertor. If red that will need replacing for it is causing the backfiring. Also a loose distributer will do this

Why does it run well, then backfire and stall?

make, model, year? backfires are spontaneous burning (exploding) of unburnt fuel outside of the combustion chamber. suspect bad spark plug/s, ignition coils, ignition timing, computer, leaking fuel injector, etc. scan for trouble codes, then post back. because the problem is intermittent, problem manifests only when hot (engine at operating temperature) do tests for both cold & hot conditions. test resistances (ohm) of suspected sensors: cam & crankshaft position sensors, ignition coils (if possible),(search the web for the recommended procedures). also test voltages at the computer (search the web for the pin outs of the computer of your car). also check associated relays (like for the fuel pump, etc.) a bad relay may have its coil open when heated, then becomes good again when cold. i suspect the car may have a good fuel delivery but the sparks are not coming in on demand, thus backfiring.

What causes my 1965 4 speed mustang to backfire and sometimes stall?

backfiring is ignition of the fuel mixture while an inlet valve is still open. Check firing order as there may be a HT lead crossed . If it backfires then the mixture is burnt in the inlet manifold so there is nothing left for the cylinders so it will stall. If you are running holley carby then check the power valve for a hole in the diaphram Check for vacuum leaks. check ignition timing is correct and not too far advanced. if the HT leads are touching each other this will induce a spark in the wrong cylinder --use lead spacers from an auto spares shop
