If your gauge reads full, the wire to the tank unit is grounded. Remove the wire from gauge to tank. The gauge should now read 'empty'. If still reading full, the gauge is faulty, or possibly it's the voltage regulator that supplies reduced voltage to operate the panel instruments. If the voltage at the panel unit is ok, run a makeshift wire along the outside of the vehicle to the tank unit. If it still read full, replace the gauge.

When testing a fuel guage you should disconnect the wires to it,guage should read over full, ground the float wire, turn off key then turn back on should read empty. You have to cycle the key for guage to move.If still inop the wire is broken in the harness between the tank and the dash.Voltage on the float wire is low. When tested with a test light it will barely light the light and pulsate. This test indicates the wiring is good.

Fuel gauge doesn't work

Instruments are generally supplied with power from a common source and if the other dashboard lights and gauges work it is a fair assumption for the time being, loss of power to the circuit isn't the problem.

Most fuel gauge problems are caused by either the fuel tank ground being lost or the rheostat inside the tank sender failing.

In the traditional fuel gauge circuit when a bimetal, moving coil or moving iron gauge is used, the circuit can be tested simply by shorting the wire to the gauge unit to a good ground when the gauge would read full, proving the gauge and wiring is ok.

It is best to be aware other types of gauge might be used and modern digital vehicles might have to be treated differently - instead of being grounded a sensor substitute might be needed or simply test the tank unit with an ohm meter.

My 65 mustang fuel gauge reads past full all the time. the tank and sending unit and gauge are new I removed the sending unit wire and its still goes past full. How can do to correct this problem.

power goes through the gauge down to the sender unit ,through the resistance to ground
what you have indicates a short in the wire after the gauge and before the sender unit

I have a97 chevy c1500 the fuel gauge never worked,so i put a new sending unit in still dont work gauge reads past full @all times can anyone help

Your problem with you fuel gauge is not the sending unit or the gauge in the cluster. You have a broken ground wire in the the harness that goes to the sending unit. look for broken wires or wires that have bin picked with a test light they will have corrosion

If the sending unit was connected and grounded, I would guess the gauge in the cluster is faulty.

Put new fuel pump, fuse, and relay in 1998 chevy s10 and still no power to fuel pump

Did you check the ground wire on the frame. There is a ground wire that is bolted to the top frame rail near the left rear wheel opening. I've seen that wire break or get corroded where it bolts to the frame. I'm not sure of the location on a 1998 but that's where it is on the earlier models as well as the full size trucks. That wire also grounds the gas gauge, does the gas gauge read goofy? Also keep in mind the pump only runs for 3-5 seconds then it shut off, until the engine starts, or the starter is engaged. Good luck!

My fuel gauge on my 1993 moterhome with454 chevy engine reads half full when it is empty

You have to drop the tank, on your fuel sending unit if the "float" that tells the gauge how full your tank it. These like to get holes, or jam up. So it is only going up half way, and your gauge only reads half full. So it could have a hole, it could be sticking, or a variety of things. Before you go doing all that, I'd check the ground wire off your unit, since it is working doesn't sound like a ground issue, but they can be tricky. Good luck.
