Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Regular car maintenance

I recently bought a 98 Chevy Cavalier. I don't know much about cars but I want to keep it running well, and other than oil changes I don't know what sort of maintenance should be preformed regularly. So, what are things I need to do regularly to keep my Chevy running well, and how often?

Check oil light on 1996 chevy cavalier. guy who sold me said that it was easy fix if i bought the part. but the check oil light keeps coming on and off. there is a rattling noise in the back so im not...

My question is that if it was an easy fix why didn't he fix it? I would put a manual oil pressure gauge on the engine to check the oil pressure. When an oil light comes on that is not good. It may just have a bad oil pressure sending unit but I would confirm that with a manual gauge which you can buy at any parts store for pretty cheap. If you are hearing rattling noises from the engine I would suspect internal engine problems especially if you don't have good oil pressure. Is the oil up to the correct level? It may be something little but I would want to know what my oil pressure is and if it's not good I would try to take the car back and demand my money back because that car is not worth $2000 if it needs major work. Good luck.

We have a 2005 chevy caviler 4 door and need to know where the iol dip stick is thanks

the oil dip stick is on the very front passenger side of the car, right next to upper black radiator hose. [1'' away]. i will assume you just bought this car & no one showed you where it was. if not, & you got this car when new, how in worlds name did you check your oil over the last 6 years?? lets hope you had it done by your dealership on a regular basis, or you are headed for some serious problems. good luck.

How many miles can i expect to get out of a 98 chevy cavalier before i have any major repairs to worry about?

That all depends on you. If your the type that keeps the oil changed and fresh tune up parts installed and dont hot rod you can expect many thousands of miles out of it. But if your harder on cars its almost impossable to determin. Could be a week, could be 10 years.

I'm looking for how to check the transmission fluid level in a 98 Chevy Cavalier that does not have a dipstick.

Vehicle running in Park. A plug has to be removed from the case - front edge of trans case, passenger side, about two inches up from pan rail. If oil trickles out of hole, it is fine. If not, add fluid up on top through the hole (red cap) until it runs out below. Then replace plug before you shut off the vehicle.

Strange I know..... you should see the 02 and up Explorers!! Hate em

Temp sender

If it's like my 98 cavalier it's located in the housing where the upper radiator goes into engine, it's right beside it.

I want to buy a 1996 Chev Cavalier with 62K miles. What do I need to look for regarding maintenance or if the car is worth buying. Thanks, Barbi

Check coolant level to make sure it is reasonably clean (not new) check engine oil the same way...should not be black but new coolant or oil can mean that it was changed to cover up a problem, or that there was a recent repair done. Look in the oil fill hole and see if there is any visible sludge. Check trans fluid (automatic) make sure it does not smell burned. If service records are available, check that regular service has been done, also look for "repeat" repairs like trans service twice in one month etc...indicates a problem, perhaps unresolved. Look underneath for leaks. any leaks are bad (even if you know they may be pretty normal.) Make sure that engine is cold when you get there...People will often run a car that has a hard start cold problem, so you will not know about it. Drive the car. Anything you don't like will annoy you after you buy it. anything that feels "wrong" probably is.
If you can, have a mechanic look it over. And, set aside about 2-3 hundred dollars to have all fluids changed as soon as you buy it (gives you a good baseline for continued maintenance.
Good luck
