The cooling fan on my 2001 Ford Escort SE will not come on while driving the car. I have replaced the computer, temp.sensor, cooling fan relay module, checked all the fuses( under the hood & inside under dash). The fan works when the heater and/or air-conditioner is turned on, but the fan will not kick-in during normal driving which causes the car to overheat. I have tried everything I know to solve the problem, but so far it has been futile.
Check the coolant temperature with the car stopped. At idle with the hood up keep the thermometer in the coolant. Confirm if the coolant is not overheating but the engine is!!
Run the A/C keeping the thermometer in the coolant and allow the fan to kick on.
If with the A/C on the engine doesn't overheat then it confirms that the low speed on the fan motor is not working. Read the description of the Taurus where the low speed is used for normal operation when temperature is required but the high speed is activated when the A/C is on. The circuit is simple.
In your case the low speed has to be activated for the A/C to go into the high speed. The fact that the high speed is working and low speed is not indicates the low speed of the fan is defective.
Other problems such as the thermostat or plugged cooling system(radiator clogged) could be the root problem!
Hope this helps?
First you need to understand the fan only runs after the engine reaches 225-230 degrees Fahrenheit? You failed to give any details of when the engine seems to overheat, like what kind of driving you are doing, sitting in traffic, cruising down the road? Is the cooling system in good condition with clean coolant and no rust? If you jump the relay socket does the fan come on, if you disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor does the fan come on? (will run by default)

the easiest way to help you is you can purchase a repair manual for your vehicle at an auto parts store like napa,Oreillys or auto zone the manuals are around 20 dollars and have all the specifics you will need to do this your self. these manuals have diagrams and step by step instructions. good luck and hope this helps you.

Hi Elena,
Get the wiring checked for the compressor also some of the ford escort sedan model had the push button for the compressor and rotation for the blower. Sensor is only for the speed variation of the blower if i am right you should have the three speed blower switch on the dash board. if it's just blowing and not cooling just push the same button and check it should start cooling.
thanks
Have a nice day!
SOURCE: I need a schematic for 1999 Ford Escort Se rear brake lines
start with easy thing first are you sure both bulbs are ok ? get a test lamp
or make one!
get a good 12v bulb attach wires to side of bulb one to the terminal on base of
bulb, tape together now you can fined volts
hand brake on out of gear?
turn key on go inside car above the brake
theres a switch pull the plug off
put one end your test lamp to earth (the car body) and the other wire put to the terminals on the plug you pulled off if you get your test bulb to light its the switch thats faulty
replace switch if you have power at the switch and still no lights make a short bit of wire take back the insulation a bit so bair wire is showing make it in to a u shaped and put in to plug above the
brake that you pulled off you should now have volts(power) in the boot useing your new test lamp
to fned it make good all earthing points its somewhere between the switch and the boot?
if you fine when brake is pressed you get more than one light on its a bad earth
if you have no power at the switch ts prob fuse box fault tthry wll known for bad solder joins
good luck ps dont foget to replace plug
SOURCE: 1991 Ford Escort fan will not turn on and motor overheats.
some water from the tail pipe is normal but if the car is running bad then it is possible the head gasket is blown. on the escorts that i have owned i have found that the main relay is usually burned and needs to be replaced. it is possible that the fan is dragging and burning this relay up if this relay is good then you may be better off taking it to the electrical shop.
