To adjust the belt tension on a 72 you can slightly loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place, pull the alternator towards the outside of the loop the belt makes, then re-tighten the alternator bolts. If you can't get enough tension through the adjustment you'll need to replace the belt.

1972 VW beetle standard sedan, need to know which wires that go to the ignition coil

For the 1972 VW Beetle, the ignition coil is typically connected to the positive terminal of the ignition switch, and the negative side of the coil is connected to the distributor. The distributor then sends the spark to each spark plug to ignite the fuel in the cylinders. The wires going to the ignition coil should be two different colors: one for the positive side and one for the negative side. The positive wire should be connected to the ignition switch, and the negative wire should be connected to the distributor. Regarding the voltage regulator, if you are not getting any current on one side of the prongs, it could be a sign of a faulty voltage regulator. However, it's also possible that there could be a wiring issue or a bad connection. One way to test the voltage regulator is to use a multimeter to check the voltage output from the regulator. You can also check the wiring and connections to make sure everything is secure and not damaged. It's worth noting that the generator and voltage regulator system in the VW Beetle is a bit different from modern alternator systems. If you are not familiar with working on vintage VWs, it may be helpful to consult with a mechanic or VW specialist who has experience with these types of systems.

My 1972 Vw bug won't start anymore. It acts like

The basic process is to check for spark at the coil and the plugs, then check for gas in the carb. If you have spark, it should try to start with carb cleaner sprayed into the carb throat.
If it does, you then check for fuel pump pressure in the line between the pump and the carb.

Hello: The voltage regulator is inside the alternator (generator) The generator can be overhauled. The brushes, diodes, rectifier bridge and voltage regulator all can be replaced along with the stator, rotor and bearings although now days it may be cheaper to replace the alternator.

1972 VW classic. Starts when cold, NP, won't

It's your starter. When a faulty starter is cold, it will function but once it warms up, it requires more and more power to get it to work. Although you may have sufficient power to turn on the lights radio etc... a starter requires much more power to engage. A new starter should solve your problem. Best of luck.

Gas smell

your brand new 1972 VW beetle may have as simple hole in the fuel line..when the car is not running you will not see any gas leaks becuase there is no call for gas to be fed to the motor.

have someone, or yourself crawl under the vehicle and look fort a small dripping or small stream of fuel.....REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!...gas is HIGHLY explosive and flammable...no smoking while checking/working on the rpoblem...and fuel's smell comes from Naptha, a chemical added to oil to make gasoline, it is a very strong ordor..a small amount can smell like a gallon.
hope this helps you
