there should be a decal under the hood somewhere that shows the belt routing. if its gone you can probably go to the library and find a book of your car that will show the routing and you can either draw a picture or take a photo of it.
The 1996 Buick Riviera SC has two belts. An inner and an outer belt. The
outer belt is for the supercharger and the inner belt is the drive
accessory belt. Rotate the tensioner pulley (idler) and remove the outer
belt first. The do the same to remove the inner belt. Check all make
pulleys and make sure they are free of any debris or oil.
Install
Route the belt according to the diagram above leaving the tensioner
pulley for last and maintaining tension on the belt with your hand.
Rotate the tensioner pulley enough to slip the belt on. Inspect your
belt and make sure it on correctly before you start to put the outer
belt on. Repeat these steps for the outer belt.
Hope this helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).
Good engine 28 mpg+ hwy. These 3800 engines had upper intake problems and would leak coolant into the combustion chamber. The new ones were re-designed and do not give any trouble. My 90 buick 3800 has 295000 miles on it. If yours is supercharged it does not have that intake problem.
The supercharged 3800 engine uses two accessory drive belts. The outer belt drives the supercharger. The inner belt drives the generator, power steering pump, coolant pump and air conditioning compressor. All driven accessories are rigidly mounted to the engine. Drive belt tension is maintained by the spring loaded belt tensioner. Each belt has its own tensioner. Remove:Place a jack with a block of wood on it under oil pan to support engine. Caution : Be sure the wood block extends past the width of the oil pan to avoid damage. Torque axis engine mount bolt where it connects the mount to the engine mounting bracket.
