'96 2.2 cavalier need manual shift out of first (replaced engine

After replacing the engine (2.2) on a '96 cavalier we have to manually shift the transmission to second. The replacement engine was from a manual tranmission car.

It also is leaking transmission fluid.

Is there a vacuum control on the automatics the was not setup correctly?

Or what else could be wrong?

it is a three speed if that helps

  • Anonymous Apr 15, 2010

    To the replier

it has a 1 2 d on the dash so I presume it is a three speed.

    Speedometer works.

  • Anonymous Apr 15, 2010

Still trying to figure out this board so hope this isn't redundant.

The transmission is a 3 speed (has 1 2 D but no 3 on dash indicator) and the speedometer workds fine.

The problem is 125 govener uses a check ball type govener the balls become stuck in the govener-also look at the pan see if it is pushed up into the trans where they used a jack to hold it,
then look at cable at the top of trans [where it hooks to the intake ]
it could be the cable is coming apart and sticking

3 speed auto or 4 speed auto? Does the speedometer work?

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2010

No vac control on a th125. If you take off in D it just stays in first? It sounds like the governor like ogremlin said

Sorry to hear that. Hope it works good when you get it back.

Burning smell, check engine light-misfire, rough idle 96 cavalier

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.

1st and 2nd gear won't catch in my manual 96

it is very likely this is being cuased by worn shift linkage and not the transmission itself, check the shift rods and bushings for being excessively loose, also any trans repair shop will do a test drive and give you a free diagnosis in hope of getting the work, things are tight right now. please rate this.
