Have a oil leak on a 1997 maxima on left side of heads as looking down at engine from front?

If the leak is coming from the top of the head could be just the valve cover gasket leaking which is common in a vehicle of that age. 1st, I would check the valve cover bolts to ensure they are tightened to proper torque specs (according to owners manual) Best way to locate the source of the leak is to clean the engine in that area and then check the leak often to pinpoint it. Valve cover gaskets can be changed easily depending on how much "stuff" you have to remove to get to it.
