I have a 2005 mazda 3 2.3l that is burning oil. I purchased the car six weeks ago and my mechanic did an oil change a couple days after. My low engine oil pressure light came on 4 weeks later and the dipstick was dry. I did another oil change and an engine flush and one week later the dipstick was dry again. My mechanic said it could be the pcv valve that needs to be changed. Any opinions?
Possibly the pcv but check if your cars exhaust smoke is blueish or white in color if it does and your car doesnt have an oil leak then sure its burning engine oil along with fuel, the piston rings is defective, since you replaced engine oil the additive that the owner has put with the oil to prevent blowby is gone thats why it starts burning oil.....
what makes your mechanic say it's the pcv valve(positive crank case ventilation)? if the pcv valve is defective it's not a good enough reason to cause excessive oil escape of engine oil, try this trick, since there is no engine oil leak from the bottom
1.try buying a blowby additive that you can purchase from a local car parts dealer , read the label and mix it with engine oil and see the oil level after sometimes
2. remove the spark plugs and pour 2 oz. of engine oil to the piston head keep it for 2 days and observe let me know if this trick applies to your problem. NOTE: this is just a temporary solution without long term effect.
since that did not help pls. try to do this to know if it's the pcv that has the problem, remove the oil filler cap and dipstick and see if it's steaming due to back pressure, if it does the engine needs full overhaul. If no steam comes out from the dipstick pipe and oil filler then sure it's the pcv that has the problem.

I have oil and gas mixing together in my oil pan, could the pcv valve cause this?
Have the same problem with my mazda 3--mechanic said pcv may do it - but checked it out and said it was ok--suggested i try changing oils--will try that first

I dont want to spend money on something and its not the real problem. Is there anything else it could possibly be? dirty pistons rings...
The only thing my mechanic said to me about the pcv is that it could be causing the oil to be dispersed improperly or something to that effect. The only other thing I can think of is maybe dirty piston rings other than that I am open to more suggestions. I did try both of your recommended tricks to of no avail
1. I tried this and my engine burned 75% of the oil mixed with 50% blowby additive in two days.
2. tried this and it didn't make any difference really
