I have a 87 ford ranger and i put a fuel pump in the tank and drove about a mile and died.Has gas to the engine. will only run if sprayed down the throttle body.Its a 2.9, any thoughts on problem. Thank

The first thing to check is the Fuel pressure at the Fuel Injector Rail schrader valve. You can get an inexpensive test kit at Harbor Freight. The pressure should be between 28 and 45 psi with the engine running. If it is lower than that you can replace the filter. If that doesn't cure the pressure problem then the pump is next. first take starting fluid and spray it into the throttle body while someone starts the engine if it keeps running while your spraying the fluid into the throttle body then you must check the relay change with a new one if same condition then the fuel pump is not working check the fuse if that's good and the wires going to the pump are good and the fuel pump is good then go to the idle air control or the throttle position sensor but I think your fuel pump is the issue here or fuel delivery is not happening

Exhaust gas return (EGR valve) might be malfunctioning

You may have cooked the fuel pump.
Cars today use a fuel pump in the gas tank. The pump uses gasoline for both lube and to help keep the pump cool. Anytime the tank is below 1/4 the pump is working harder and running hotter than normal. If you drove it for 2 hours low on fuel, the pump may have died.
I would check the fuel pump relay to make sure the pump is getting power, if it is not, you can bypass the relay to verify it is not a pump problem.

It can't be filled up because it leaks, or won't take anymore gas? Check the hose from the fuel filler to the tank for kinks or restrictions, if you have leaks, fill it up and trace the leak. Either problem will cause EVAP codes, hard starts, and cause vehicle to die.

try testing/replacing the coil. if it stalles after the car warms up that gives the coild time to over heat and die.

remove dog house locate test port and install guage should be 45-60 psi

i was once pulling a trailer with a ranger when it suddenly lost power and the engine died. turns out the problem was with the fuel shut off inertia switch. the switch is supposed to activate in case of accident. on my model the inertia switch is located in the passenger side under the glove box. dont know where yours is located. once you find it, just push the button and see if it resets. good luck.
