Use you VIN number to find out the engine and wiring specs. M54 E46 is just a body code. Engines has variants too.

Toyota corolla 2001 making noise as it reaches running temp.p1346 code

I think the engine is misfiring because of cam position sensor. These can be the possible causes :
- Faulty Intake Camshaft Position sensor
- Faulty Camshaft Position Solenoid Valve
- Engine mechanical condition - Valve timing off
- Intake Camshaft Position sensor harness is open or shorted
- Intake Camshaft Position sensor circuit poor electrical connection

BMW 325CI 2001 NO POWER FROM STOP POSITION LIKE IM DRIVING ON 2 FLAT TIRES!

i doubt its a sudden occurrence. Get the throttle body off and clean it with carb cleaner until its spotless. Check all breather pipes on manifold and intake side and make sure they are clean. Other possible cause is bad throttle position sensor.....

If the car is having trouble maintaining idle (the tach dips and car dies) the common causes are the idle control valve and camshaft position sensors. The cam sensors failing will be indicated by a check engine light.

The ICV can removed and cleaned with good results (I think there is a write up on bimmerfest) or purchased new for about $100.

While you are in there check the intake boot that is Y shaped for cracks, it's prone to fail and will mess up your idle too.

My 2004 BMW 325 ci convertible is difficult to start.

If the fuel filter has been replaced, then maybe these are other reasons:

1. intake camshaft sensor (known to go bad on BMW E46s). ~$100 part.

2. fuel injectors (though I doubt they go bad that easily). ~$100/ piece. Your car has 6.

3. Ignition coils. ~$90 a piece. Your car has 6.

4. mass air flow sensor. Again, another expensive part. ~$300.
