IGNITION KNOCK (DETONATION) SENSOR the knock sensor Is on the back of engine (driver side on LHD vehicles) under the cam position sensor. it is a giant PITA to change. i had to cut a wrench in half (7/8 i think??) and use a pry bar to break loose the sensor..

YOU HAVE 1999 VITARA .I DIDNT SEE NO 1997 DIESEL VITARA. YOU HAVE 1.6 OR 2.0 ENGINE.TO GET A TRANSMISSION YOU HAVE 2WD OR 4WD THAT WHAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN TRANSMISSION.
Haynes don't cover that engine. I've found a copy of the H25 engine manual which is similar to the H20 engine we have. If you search for SQ416 in google you'll find a copy you can buy or if you're lucky you'll find a free download somewhere like I did!! :-) It has helped me loads.
my 1993 very recently aguired.Grand vitara deisel. has imoberlised it's self. have had guys up with computer diognostics and found it in safe mode.found fault on turbo charger fixed it..all go, went for a short run ..great turned it off and on twice all fine.....next morning it had imoberlised itself again guys came with computer no fault found.. but it still will not start....help please........
