In most cars, it is placed in the same chamber as the intake air filter. In my 96 corolla, it is on the "clean air" side of the filter box just before the pipe that leads to the manifold. The only thing i can think to compare the apperence of the sensor to would be something like a small rubber spark plug. If it is not in the air filter box, it has to be somewhere attached to the manifold or the pipe leading from the manifold to the air filter box. Let me know if this answers your question and rate my response please.

Replaced water pump but cant find where to plug sensor back in

You didn't say what sensor, or whether it is 4 or 6 cylinder. Assuming you are talking about the water temperature sensor, it is located (from standing over the front bumper) on the top, right side of the lower intake manifold. You will see it by looking under the bulge of the upper half of the intake manifold, the part with the air passages. It mates onto the lower intake manifold, which has water cooling passages, making it an ideal location for the water temperature sensor.

IAT sensor

The intake air temperature sensor can be found in the air intake duct, or threaded into the intake manifold depending on which engine you have.
