My 2000 Yamaha golf cart has 6-4cell 8 volt batteries. I did not leave the cart plugged in during the winter months. When I attempted to charge yesterday, the charger lights sequenced but stayed on "Incomplete". The charge level in the batteries is approx. 7 volts apiece according to my voltmeter. I understand the voltage level must be at a certain level for the charge to start. Is this correct? Will a 12 volt "trickle charger" bring the level up? Help.

Yes to both questions. the charger must sense 41.5 volts to activate the relay inside the charger. Being a repair shop, I have a charger that is rigged to charge even DEAD batteries. I do not recommend this for the novice. A charger set on 12 volts will bring the batteries back up to 8.2-8.6 volts. A cheap trickle charger may not put out enough to charge a battery of this size. Remember that they are used to MAINTAIN a charge. Connect the Voltmeter and watch for voltage rise. If it rises to 8.1 or above, it is charging. Trojan battery company recommends charging at least once a month.

Thanks for both the question and the answer. Very helpful. I didn't know you were supposed to charge them once a month.http://store.thesolarbiz.com/online/Item...

YAMAHA OLF CART GASOLINE OPERATED CHARGED BATTERY WHENi TURN KEY ON AND TRY TO GO IT WONT MOVE AND A SLIGHT WHINE

Check the starter solenoid, but sounds like the starter is bad. If it is draining the battery when you try to start it, then it is the starter. Check for a bad ground first though. The starte requires a great deal of amperage and a weak ground could be the problem.

Can i use 3 12volt batteries in a golf cart instead of 6 6volt batteries

Yes you can but the down side is that the total amp hour rating from 3 x 12 volt batteries may be a lot less than the amp hour rating from 6 x 8 volt batteries. This means you will run out of battery power a lot sooner.

Electric golf cart running slow

Have the batteries tested with a load cell. Just using a volt meter will NOT work. Look at the posts and make sure all the wires have NO corrosion. Trojan, Powertron, etc batteries last about 6 years. Check the water level after charging. IF YOU SEE ANY WHITE ON WHAT SHOULD BE DARK GREY PLATES, THE BATTERIES ARE SHOT...

I dont think my yamaha gas powered golf cart is charging properly. How can I trouble shoot this problem?

With the engine running at about half power/speed, put a volt meter across the battery terminals. The meter should read somewhere around 14.5 volts. If it is below 13 volts it is definitely not charging. Consider that the battery, unless new, could also be failing.

EZGO golf cart won't go forward

Your batteries have died. The reason it will barely move in reverse is that current is being supplied to the motor is a direction that it spends very little time using. There is a slight change in the armature over time, and reverse tends to work better over time. Check the voltage when under load. (run jumper wires from the + and - of the battery bank. If it is a 36 volt cart and the voltage drops to below 36 volts, you do not have enoug current to run the cart. Plug in the charger and watch the ampmeter. If it goes up to about 20 amps, then it is charging. It should take a good charge after 10 hours. If the cart charges and only runs a short distance, the batteries need replacing.
