Starting/stalling problem I have a GMC 1998 Sierra diesel 6.5 L truck and keep having stalling or starting problems. Usually after bleeding the filter for a while then pouring some water on it, it will start and runs fine, but problem occurs again after a while not neccessarly same day. Also sometimes after stopping and trying to start again,I checked today with a mechanic and he mentioned P0238 code but not sure if it is related or I have multiple problems, I have cleaned and changed filters recently. Any clue what is causing these problems?

It could be your pmd, they get to hot sitting where GM located them from the factory. check on relocating it they sell kits for it as this is a VERY common problem w/the 6.5.

My 89 gmc sierra only starts if i put starting fluid can that be a bad regulator

usually a bad regular will cause rich operation--not lean. Will it keep running after the starting fluid burns up, or does it stall. If it only runs by continuing to add starting fluid, there is a problem with the injector operation. If you need more troubleshooting steps, please answer and provide engine size.

I need step by step instructions on replacing a fuel filter in a 1998 gmc 6.5 turbo diesel please

I got this from Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual. I bought it for my 6.2.
1. Remove the fuel filler cap and air cleaner assembly.
2. On filters without an air bleed screw, place a rag under the filter to soak up fuel and detach the lower clip FIRST to release pressure and then the top clip. They pop off with a screwdriver.
3. On filters with an air bleed screw (top passenger side) drain fuel from the filter by opening the screw first and the engine water drain valve (engine front near thermostat) if it has one. Detach the clips and remove filter.
4.Make sure the seating surface is clean and place new filter in position. On non-air bleed filters put the upper clip on FIRST. On air bleed filters secure both clips, then close the valve and attach a piece of hose to the bleed port into a pail.
5. Air must be purged BEFORE start up, so disconnect the pink wire from the top of the injector pump and crank the engine in 10 second cycles with a 30 second wait time until clear bubble-free fuel comes out the lower fitting or air bleed. Connect the lower clip on the non-air bleed , close the bleed hose and reconnect the pink wire.
6. Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes to purge any remaining air and check for leaks.
Hope this helps.

Choking while driving (diesel)

Try changing the fuel filter on the truck sounds like it is not getting enough diesel to it. Also check and make sure there is no water in the system. If you have water in the system they make a product that you can put in it to remove the moisture. Can be purchased at any local parts house.

I need to replace the fuel filter on my 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Duramax Diesel 6.6L. Please tell me how to do it.

ITS A SPIN ON FILTER, YOU NEED TO DISCONNECT THE WATER SENSOR ON THE BOTTOM OF THE FILTER, THEN USING A STRAP FILTER WRENCH LOOSEN THE FILTER AND SPIN IT OFF.

CHECK THE FILTER HOUSING TO BE SURE THE INNER FILTER SEAL ISN'T ON THE HOUSING AND CAME OFF WITH THE FILTER.

REMOVE THE WATER LEVEL SENSOR AND DISCARD THE SEAL.

INSTALL THE WATER LEVEL SENSOR ON THE NEW FILTER. USING A LITTLE GREASE ON THE INNER FILTER SEAL AND ON THE OUTER O-RING TO HOLD IT IN PLACE, SPIN ON THE NEW FILTER.

OPEN THE VENT ON THE UPPER SIDE OF THE FILTER HOUSING. PUSH DOWN ON THE HAND PUMP QUICKLY UNTIL THE FUEL IS COMING OUT OF THE VENT. CLOSE THE VENT AND PUMP THE FILTER PUMP UNTIL IT FEELS SOLID. AT THIS POINT START THE ENGINE. IF IT STALLS PUMP IT UP AGAIN AND RESTART THE ENGINE. IF YOU HAVE AN ASSISTANT THEY CAN PUMP THE FILTER PUMP WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND QUIT WHEN YOU FEEL THE ENGINE IS NOT GOING TO STALL. ABOUT 10 TO 15 SECONDS USUALLY WORKS.

CHECK FOR LEAKS.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE USE BRAKE WASH TO REMOVE THE FUEL SPILLED DURING THE FILTER REPLACEMENT. ALLOW IT TO DRY BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE.

RATE ME PLEASE.

1998 gmc 4.3 starts up but loses power 3-5 mins later, will restart and run again for another short time, fuel filter has just been replaced.

Install a pressure gauge, start and run 3-5 minutes and watch the pressure. You should see the pressure maintain as it did when first started. If it begins to drop, the fuel pump has gotten weak and is starting to fail.
Let me know what you find.
Regards.

Stalling

Possibly faulty ignition module is the problem, stalls when engine is hot when you sit for a while it cools off and runs again until it heats up again, those are usually the symptoms of a bad ignition module and after a while it may give out all together and not run at all, usually if the module is at fault it shuts down the fuel pump so the engine don't load up with fuel, do to when engine continuously cranks over the injectors never stop squirting fuel and flood the engine do to lack of spark which is produced by the module, this could possibly be your problem.
