1990 chevy lumina, Just changed bad ignition switch, and now my car will start and run, but it's not idling right, it's kinda surging a little. When you come to a stop it stalls but then it will start right up again. I have new spark plugs and wires so it can't be them. What could be causing the idle problem?
Check egr valve for vacuum leak. pull hose from manifold. put hose in your mouth like a straw and **** on it. if the valve moves, then it's good. if it doesn't, you need a new egr valve. WARNING, they are fricking expensive! auto zone price $204. NO JOKE
If you disconnected the battery when replacing your ignition switch , your computer might need to re-learn the codes, start the car,and put it in drive and hold the brake for 15 minutes while it idles, shut it off after 15 minutes, and then restart it again and repeat same process for just 5 minutes, that should reset it on the 90' lumina, that advice came directly from a auto tech.
Does it set a service engine light ? have you driven it much replacing the plugs and weirs / did you gap the plugs /was it doing this surging before the plugs / just guessing / check for vacuum leak / have codes checked { possible o2 } verify. Auto Zone. will scan for free. please let us know what you think was this helpful. feel free to ask if you need any further assistance Thank You .
That my friend sounds like a vacuum leak. What you can do to solve this theory is spray either at all possible locations a vacuum leak could occur. Intake manifold vacuum lines head gaskets. If the car will surge badly at any of these locations you have solved your porblem
