What did the codes read exactley? This may help in the diagnoses ,and water in fuel maybe the problem, change the fuel filter, and add HEET ,a moister dryer, two bottles, and a additive called LUCAS fuel treatment ,one bottle, this will help.

Number three cylinder is miss fire,it does not mean it is the coil, although it could be,remove the coil, and boot, and spark plug, inspect them to see if the plug,or boot look bad, replace the spark plug, and if the boot is burned or distorted, replace it,a fuel injector can cause a miss fire also, but change the spark plug and see if this solves the problem,if not replace the coil,if it is a dead miss, then the coil might be bad,as for the water in the fuel ,the cap is missing,,and 5 dollars worth of HEET will not hurt, also, fuel from the fuel station, can have water in it.It happens a lot.

If you change the coil,it should repair the problem,if,the injector is not bad, sometimes they will go out.The cap is most likely the code that set,and they take a while to go off, unless you have the codes erased,if you have and it still comes back on,then the e g r position sensor would be the problem,or the hoses going to it are leaking vacuum.

The heet, and the fuel injection, both are to be poured into the fuel tank. But do not count the coli out to be ok,it still could have issues.

I learned the hard way that you cannot buy a replacement gas cap from Auto Zone and have it fit on a Chevy Equinox. I tried for over two months thinking there had to be some other issue (there was), but soon as I gave in and bought a cap from dealer, one of the codes cleared. Don't try to save money. For a few dollars more, it is worth it. I still have other code problems due to battery replacement, but learned my lesson on the gas cap.

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse. Check everything with engine cranking. If your missing all three, check your crank sensor. Can you check applicable trouble codes?

If your saying the starter motor won't even crank the engine, that is a different issue?

2005 chevy cobalt check engine light

make sure the gas cap is on tight. vapor recovery system depends on the closure of the gas cap. if that did not solve your problem, I would suggest to get a new gas cap first, before going to the dealer or any repair shop for a turn-up.

Engine runs rough. Engine light on.

Try checking the spark plug, and the spark wires, if that doesnt clear things up then try replacing the roter under the distributor cap and check the cap for any corrosen
