Engine Overheats when AC is on..

Hello. i have a 92 buick lasabre that runs totally fine even on hot days until i turn on the ac. About an hour of running the ac, the engine will feel like its missing until it gets up to speed. I will have to turn off the ac to slowly remedy the problem. But if i shut off the car it will not start again until it cools off. btw I do not have any problems running the ac on cooler days less than 80 degrees or at night when the sun goes down. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like your AC compressor bearings may be overheating causing excessive drag/loading on the engine. No easy way to check this unless you can take the serpentine belt off when the car won't start and see if it is really hard to turn the compressor shaft.

SOURCE: Engine cranks too long before

The issue may be related to the high temperature. You mentioned that the car runs hot at low speed. Inspect the radiator fan if it turns on when the temp gauge reaches the middle or close to it. The fan may not be starting up or is weak. If it does not turn on check first the relay. Try swapping it to test or it may be a bad fan. Check also if the fluid is adequate, check if the engine takes more fluid than usual. If the fan is OK and still you are loosing fluid then there may be leaks in the system or a bad water pump.

Other items that are affected by heat are the electrical components and wiring. Check for loose wires or loose connections. There may be bad wires, or ones that are worn out or exposed conductors that needs to be replaced.

Check the sparks for all cylinders. You can pullout the hi-tension cable from the engine and see if there is a spark while you hold it over the engine. Do this for each cylinder one at a time. You should be able to identify which one has no spark. For single cylinder it could be a bad hi-tension wire. For more than one issue it could be bad cables or the distributor coil is bad.

Check also the battery. IF you can jump start the car without any issues then the battery may be failing. Car battery other than being an electrical component has water inside which can be affected by the heat.

Try to do the tests to eliminate the possible causes and accurately narrow down you issues. If you can also have a scanner connected to the car it may retrieve error codes from the computer. Some shops would let you borrow their scanners.

Why cooling fans do not work unless ac is on?

Are you talking about the fans under the hood? If so, these are thermostatically controlled. They won't turn on unless the engine (and thus the coolant in the radiator) gets above a certain temperature. But they will always run when the A/C is on. If yours NEVER run, even when you've been sitting in traffic with the engine running for an hour on a hot day, take the car to a shop and have the fans/thermostats checked.

Overheating problem, what is the most probable cause?

You need to stop using it immediately before you
cause some damage or more than you may already have
That is just common sense. It should not overheat or
be any different than it was in the past without problem

The car has to be checked over/diagnosed,tested,etc for
various issues to resolve

Borrow or Rent a car until resolved

No way to guess at the problem

You should have some type of codes avail even
if the check light isn't on,you need professional help
to get a start on resolving

The timing belt maybe worn & jumped or the head gasket
bad.

Over heating isn't usually a cheap repair unless the thermostat
sticks partially closed

The RPM moves around the car is 11 years old,so it may just
need a though going over

Timing Belt,O2 Sensors,Exhaust Converter,Spark Plugs
and such

If you depend on a repair shop to do things & don't
have the knowledge to request work done throughout
the year, then you run into a lack of proactive preventative
maintenance situation. Most things are simple looking
back, once resolved

The ac thrns off and on by its self

1 Do you have an AUTO setting on your AC to Set Temperature? or 2 Do you notice this on/ off when accelerating quickly? If 1 the AC will turn and off by itself to maintain Temperature Setting. 2 Will cut power to AC when accelerating to lower gas consumption>

2000 sebring. Overheats with air conditioning on.

I just had my coolant flushed and my radiator cooling fan replaced. The car was slightly overheating and would "gargle" in the coolant bowl after I turned the engine off. It turned out to be the radiator was clogged up on one side.

I went full tilt and replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and timing belt. I have 85,000 miles on the car and it was about time to do these things anyway. It is running like a new car now.
