Check for loss of coolant also. If you can see/smell oily deposits on windshield, it's unlikely it's from the a/c system as there is relatively little lubricant there. More likely your heater core is leaking and allowing coolant to be blown up onto the windshield. There will also be a distinctive odor with this.

PLUS... you don't actually get to smell
"Phosgene gas" very long (it is quite deadly)...

Take it from an old ARMY Medic...

SOURCE: 1886 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab V8 (318) Vaccum Leak

I experienced almost the exact same thing in a customer's 1997 Dodge Caravan this week except on this one,the A/C would be blowing cold out of the vents, directly at you,and when you put the accellerator down pretty hard, the vents would cease to blow, but you could hear the defroster door flap, and the defrosters blew cold air.Let off the gas pedal,it switches back the way it originally was.Wasn't the customer's complaint, but it did make me wonder.

SOURCE: loss of a/c air through front vents

rams had a problem with the check valve not holding vaccum. Get a dodge neon check valve which is bigger to fix problem. Check valve is located above accumulator (drier).

SOURCE: fishy, steam odor coming from AC vents

Forget the radiator tank. Your AC 'Condensate drain' hose is plugged up. This is a common problem. If you know where the hose comes out under the car you can ( carefully ) push a wire up it. If you're lucky it's plugged near the end by a mud-dauber wasp. If not, take it to your dealer and see if you can persuade the write-up guy to show you where the drain outlet is as a gesture of good faith. If they insist on charging you money, consider that when you buy your next car...

I would suggest you have the oil pressure tested with a mechanical gauge to see what it is. Removing a valve cover would probably show evidence of sludge in the engine if it is there.
I have used kerosene to clean out engines but it is not the safest thing to do.

Jo Jean, which diagram are you looking for the wiring or the vacuum and what size engine do you have? You can find the engine size on the sticker under the hood. it will be like a 2.5 or 3.5 something like that. Also check out my auto-repair-website at:

2004 dodge intrepid w/a 2.7. Check engine light came on and the engine started shuttering a mile away from home. Limped her home, and figured it was the cam shaft position sensor. (Had same symptoms in...

could be the T.P.S. sensor(throttle position sensor). It would be worth the money to have a free scan done by an auto parts store, as there are too many electrical problems that can happen, I.A.C. , M.A.P. and O2 sensors, also check to see if all the spark plugs are getting spark, if a plug isnt firing, then it will stutter lose power and could cause the gas odor because its not burning the fuel in that cylinder before it is exhausted.

Odd 2001 Dodge Intrepid symptoms

You either have a thermostat or water pump problem. car is getting hot. Check to make sure you have no water leaks on the hoses or radiator. to check the thermostat, run the engine for awhile to get it hot and touch the upper radiator hose to see if it is hot . If so then the thermostat is working and the problem would be the water pump. hope this will help you.

THIS ENGINE HAS THE TIMING BELT TENSIONER ON THAT SIDE, WHICH IS PRONE TO PROBLEMS ESPECIALLY IF YOU,RE NEGLEGENT WHEN IT COMES TO OIL CHANGES. IT,S NOT DIFFICULT TO REPLACE BUT THE FACT THE OIL LEVEL IS DOWN SUGGESTS OTHER ISSUES TOO, SO I'D TAKE IT LIKE A MAN AND RUN LIKE HELL FROM THIS CAR!
