I had an oil change on March 3rd. Now March 31st my service check engine light came on. The car drives normally, it doesn't shake, backfire or is smoking

A service engine light means it's time for an oil change. That light needs reset after the oil is changed. The computer senses the miles drove automatically and says "change my oil, it's been 3,000 miles" A CHECK engine light means it has to get a scan done. Change the oil, it will be fine. It is suppose to do that. Let me know if this helps you.
should have two lights check engine and service engine soon.check engine means there is a malfunction.service soon is reprogrammable, when you change you oil. check you owners manual for reset.
The engine service light typically means something else is keying the light. Oil changes are ususally not part of the service light causes unless you have oil pressure problems. You should take the car to one of the national parts stores such as Pep Boys or Autozone where they can run a service light diagnostic to isolate the problem. This is generally a free service or low cost service. I would not drive far with the light on so you should take care of it as soon as possible before you have a major problem.
If ou fixed whatever happened during the oil change, the light will cycle off after about 3 drive cycles.
The check enine light just tells you that you are not meeting emissions right now. Only be concerned if it's flashing. That means you are sending unburned fuel to your catalytic converter whih will overheat and self destruct.
Look for a vacuum hose disconnected and check all the onnections to sensors such as, vehcile speed control sensor, mass air flow sensor, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft poition sensor, throttle position sensor, etc. Good luck.
THIS SHOULD BE IT.
How do I reset the Engine Oil life monitor and how does it work?
TO reset
To reset the Engine Oil Life monitor do the following: Reset Oil life in NAV/DIC by (with car running) going to INFO>Oil Life>RESET Press and HOLD until XXX turns to 100%
How does it work?
The oil life monitor is a pretty sophisticated algorithm.
GM "The GM Oil Life System will automatically adjust the oil change interval based on engine characteristics, driving habits and the climate in which the vehicle is operated."
The service engine light DOES NOT mean change your oil. The change oil or maintence required light means change oil. The service engine light is the same as a check engine light and means that there is something (not always really bad) is going on with your motor and need someone that has a code reader to let you know what the code is. Yes that code is a camshaft position sensor code. It is located on the passenger side of the engine in the "valley" between the two cyclinder heads. Its not too hard as long as you have some tools and some skills. Its easiest to remove the serpentine belt and remove the bolts for the power steering pump. That way you can move the pump a little to gain better access to remove the cam sensor. Just replaced one yesterday on a 99 century. Hope that helps!
Have the oil pressure sending unit checked right away. If the light is working properly, it is a warning of insufficient oil pressure, which can ruin your engine, it's probably just the sending unit, but don't take the chance of ruining your engine. I assume u checked your oil level, it could also indicate very low level. countrycurt0
