There are bushings in the linkage for the shifter under the car at the shifter and at the trans. Those wear out or the retaining pin clip may have come off and pin got loose.

Cannot get 5th and reverse gear. Feels like neutral. 1, 2, 3 and 4 work fine.

the linkage is loose or poping out! check to c if trans is tightend down

The wire of the gear which goes near of the clutch box has the inside guarnition which normally is broken and need to be changed second the clutch must be controlled

Tranny problems 03' Dodge Neon sxt 2.0

not sure on the set up of whether its rods or cables on this model for your gear linkages but sounds like one has either detached or broken which should be a relatively easy fix and not too expensive.Get a friend to move through gears while you look under to see whats moving and whats not.

RUN it could be a bad tranny

Or have it checked by a pro tranny mechanic just in case it is only a sensor issue, i see a lot of neons with this problem.

If it is the manual transmission, which i assume it is since you discussed all gears except reverse.... check the shift linkage bushings under the gear shifter in the car AND the 2 on top of the transmission. You will have to remove the battery and tray and the air intake box to see clearly. The bushings on the standard trans are the most common defective part of the neons... search ****** bushings... good luck.

Probably bad transmission. My mechanic told me to run from dodge neon.
