The condenser fan blew out and damaged my radiator on a 2005 civic ex. The car is over heating and as the temperature needle goes up the radiator fan does not move. It only moves if I put the air on and press the AC button even though I have no AC because of the condenser fan being out. What do I need to check or replace, the radiator fan relay, the coolant temperature sensor, or the thermostat or all? Where exactly is the thermostat and the coolant temperature sensor located? Also, when the condenser fan blew out it got stuck inside and and came off from one of the holding screws and damaged the radiator and it has a small leak. Can the car function only with one fan? Do I need the condenser fan? The car is overheating just being parked and running....Please help!!!

The car has coolant. There is only a small leak where the condenser motor hit the radiator. Since the temperature gauge needle goes up and the cooling fan doesn't move (except when the ac air is on although it does not cool the engine), what can cause the cooling fan not to go on on its own? I replaced the coolant sensor switch that's by the upper radiator hose (motor side), and checked the relay in the fuse box and it works (I switched it with the horn relay and it does work). Do I need both fans for the car not to overheat? I though the other one was just for the a/c. By the way I also have not heat....please help

Because you have no heat, I would bleed the air out of the system, sounds like an air lock in the system, on the water jacket there shold be a 10 mm bleeder valve, open it and allow the air to bleed out, this could very like be why your fan isn't working too ( the anti freeze isn't flowing over the temp sensor.

Why temperature needle goes up

Defective thermostat. Deposits on inside or bugs clogging the outside of the radiator. Defective fan. Defective coolant temperature/switch sensor. Dirty or old antifreeze. Low level of antifreeze and water.

it could be a possibility that the engine is running at normal temperature but your gauges are telling you that it is running hot the only way to tell is to get a temperature gauge & connect it into the water system somehow to give you an accurate reading or take the vehicle to a radiator repairer & they may be able to do it for you..........hope this helps.....cheers.

its not that hard, I dont have pics, but i can walk you through it.

1. disconnect the rad hoses and drain the coolant somewhere
2. disconnect the fan wires
2. unbolt the top supports (10mm on a honda), it should be 2 bolts on each side
3. pull up on rad
4.put the fans on the new rad
5. put back in slot
6. rebolt and hook up hoses and fan

Check the cooling fan fuse first. if ok look for a coolant fan switch on the bottom of the radiator! Honda used to use one in line for the fan,to cycle off and on.It cycles the fan at certain temperatures, while driving or setting in traffic. You may be able to jump the plug terminals to run the fan, there will be no cycling, just running steady.

Is your Civic air-conditioned (have two fans: radiator(on the left, facing the car) and condenser (on the right, facing the car)?
Does your radiator fan run at all, when the car gets hot?
Have you checked your radiator fan relay in your underhood fuse box (far upper left, facing the car, locations on cover)?
Have you investigated the thermostat?

AC cools then blows hot air, tempature needle goes up & down

Sounds like the thermostat is trying to stick, and is causing the engine to over heat, therefore condenser is not cooling the freon down enough to cool.Have the thermostat changed and the cooling system bled out, this is most likely the cause.

Overtemperature

First dont let the needle go into the red anymore!!! i blew two heads already with my civic. this can be multiple problems. your idle is going up and down because you have a vaccume leak somewhere, it could be due to low radiator fluid, or hole in a radiator hose, your air intake has a hole, something is taking in unaccepted air causing your ile to be off. this could mean you are loosing radiator fluid in your head which is increadibly bad! if your tail pipe or antifreeze resivor is emmiting white smoke then you have blown your head and i guarentee its not cheap to fix. the problems for why your temp gauge goes up could range from a bad fan not kicking on, bad water pump, bad alot of stuff. its like a domino affect, you need to take it to a trusted mechanic before you cause more harm.
