What is happend with the engine, when the timing belt broke, in the Honda-Civic LX - 1996 ? I heard that Nissan's models got free rotation, no toching with pistons and valvs-no damage to the engine.
Re: what is happend with the engine, when timing belt
ALL Nissans are interferance motors, most hondas have interferance motors depending on the engine model installed. Hopefully you engine is still good!!

check for missing vacuum hoses. run fault codes to check for wires not properly connected . Have a compression test done as broken timing belts generally bend valves . IT may not be noticeable but will be enough to affect the engine performance.
Did you triple check that your timing was correct and that none of the pistons where damaged since that is an interference engine, meaning that f the timing belt breaks or in your case the cam broke (other half stopped moving), the piston may have ran into the valve causing damage to the valve and possibly the piston.
Why do you think the Distributor is out? It's not hard to replace if you have the Haynes repair manual for your vehicle and understand how to get to TDC and line up everything. But it is very rare that a Distributor goes out. If it is not turning it is more likely that your timing Belt has broken than the distributor going bad.
These water pumps are integral with the timing belt you must replace the timing belt with the water pump because the leaking water pump and antifreeze on the timing belt causes deterioration of rubber belt thereby causing imminent failure of timing belt destroying valves $$$ google" interference engine" for an explanation of interference engine
Sounds like your timing belt broke. Do you know if it's ever been replaced? Usually they have a life expectancy of around 100,000 to 105,000 miles before they go. All your symptoms point towards it.
