305 engine --The volts gage is dropping considerably. wen i start driving alternator brand new , battery good ,starter is good, wen the car is park my volt stay in the middle is ok, but wen i start driving it drop down to red line??? any idea
The gauge could be wrong,it could be defective, have the alternator checked,at the battery,it should read from 13.65 volts to 14.25 volts with the head lights on,and the ac blower on high, with the engine running. If the alternator is new, check for 12 volts at the back of the alternator with engine off,if there is not 12 volts on the large wire,on the alternator, then the circuit is broken somewhere.Just install a new wire,of equal or larger size.Leave the original wire on the alternator, and just add a new wire, larger would be better if possible, and run it from the alternator,to the positive side of the battery,it will fix the problem.

Yes,I think the belt may be slipping,or the alternator is defective,or the alternator is not powerful enough,do you know the amperage of the alternator?Remove the alternator and take it back as defective.See if they will let you upgrade to a larger amp alternator, like a 78 amp,or even better,a 94 amp, they will bolt right up,tell them to look it up for a 84 Camaro, and choose the higher amp they have in stock, the alternator you have is most likely a 3
7 amp,or 55 amp, sometimes, they just don`t do the job.It would be a good idea to put a volt meter,of any kind,dc,and see what the alternator is charging, this will help tell if the gauge is actually acurate or not.But the large wire from alternator to battery is a good move on your part, you want as much current as possible getting to the battery.
The up size in amperage will fix the problem,I have done this a bunch of times, and by the way, besides being a guru or what ever,I am a 20 year NAPA auto parts man also,so I know the part is out there.Let me know what you think
I still think it is a bad alternator,do you have a volt meter to put on the battery? The only thing it can be is all that I have mentioned, the alternator is not putting out enough amps. The higher amp alternator should have a plastic black fan on it behind the pulley, the 94 amp does for sure, but defect this one out,and replace it.Find a volt meter and check the voltage at the battery.Tell me what it says.OK?
Did you get the alternator charging?Let me know, thanks,Ron.

thank you for you help-- is a 1983 monte carlo 305 engine --The volts gage is dropping considerably. wen i start driving alternator brand new , battery good ,starter is good, wen the car is park my volt stay in the middle is ok, but wen i start driving it drop down to red line------- the gauges are fine because the are new plus wen i drive at nite the headlights dim wen it drop down to red line on the gauges if i am park it drop less then half --- the volt on the alternator is good -- the ac dont work -- and i have a wire large size running from the alternator to the battery -- but still drop down to red line wen i drive??? any other idea???

alternator is a 75 or 78 something like that. only 2 weeks old
First, is car's 2nd alternator.Driving saw "check gage" noticed voltmeter dropping. Turned off most electrical until I could inspect belt. Belt still on and snug. Restarted car no issues on drive home. In morning, 10 minutes after turning on defroster, check gage back on, volt meter drops farther ( 1 hr drive to work), power windows would not go down to clock in. Worked 8 hours, dropped window in aux key position, car started, check gages came on drove car until I assume electric fuel pump failed, shut me down. Immediately checked battery with multi-meter 11.18 vdc, climbing rapidly. Car on highway, good guess it alternator?
