I know how to do a basic brake job but I'm beating my head. I am Trying to remove the rotor from a 2002 buick century. I removed the calipers and pads all that is showing is the rotor but it WILL NOT come off. I have tried to tap it but nothing. It seems as though it is being held on by a large nut in the middle. Do you know if this is true and if so what is the nut's size? Please help! thanks.

Ok I realize that is probally true but looking at the but it seems as though it is holding it in. I have new rotors ready to go in it. Are you 100% sure that the nut is not holding those rotors in? I have already beaten those rotors senseless and I'll do it some more if you think thats it. But it just seems like that nut is holding it in.

It is bigger on the new rotors I just checked it. I guess they are stuck big time then. I mean I'll never do a favor for the gf again honestly. The caliper bolts and everything else had to be taken off in superman mode. So if I am punding away with a hammer and nothing good is happening do I just stick with it?

  • Anonymous Mar 22, 2010

Ok well I'm a big dude. I've been laying into it. I'll try some more. Just a question. What do you do if it doesn't ever come free? I mean is there something for that?

Update. Got it off. Beat it a ridiculous amount. Because of you of course. Thanks for always being right! ;) Have a good night.

First remove the caliper bracket by removing the 2 bolts holding it on. You may have to heat the bolts to get them loose or use a big breaker bar. Then look for 2 philips screws holding the rotor on take them out . then you should be able to remove the rotor if you tap it with an hammer

It is stuck on there with rust happens all the time
get a hammer and give it a smack on the part were the wheel studs are.a firm smack if that dont work hit it were the pads ride you should see it start to **** on one side hit other side.i have never seen a car rotor on a domestic that had the spindle nut holding on rotor so im resonably sure yuor ok beating it
after some hammer work just replace rotors there cheap and i never recomend turning them it just makes them thinner and more prone to warpage

well look at your new rotors. is the center hole a few inches in diameter or is it like the size that that nut is if its the big center hole the they are stuck bigtime at the shop we use a 5 pound sledge and sometimes a big swing is needed

  • dougbender51 Mar 22, 2010

lay in to it man big hammer one huge hit that breaks it free wont hurt nothing millions of little hits can do some damage

    ps dont miss

  • dougbender51 Mar 22, 2010

oxy accetalene torch or a big propane one you want to heat the rotor up fast so less heat is transfered to the hub. they can handle alot of heat but you dont want to glow it.the rust will tend to insulate the so thats an advantage try one of those tourches that screws onto a quart cylinder and run it around the rotor

Is the center bolt used to remove rotor? or just remove caliper and it comes off with a mallet/hammer? 1993 buick century that's burned up 2 sets of pads in a year

Remove the caliper and caliper bracket if necessary. Use a hammer to break free the rotor. I seen you have replaced brake parts.. Did your replace the brake hoses also? These break down on the inside and will cause rapid brake pad wear. They won't release the calipers.

How to replace rear brake pads on 2002 buick rendevous

Those are special calipers. The piston cannot be just compressed back into the caliper - it needs to be turned as it is compressed or you can ruin the caliper. There is a kit you can rent from AutoZone or many independent auto parts stores that will perform both functions at the same time.
Block fron wheels and raise vehicle passenger side. Remove wheel. The caliper is on the top rear side of the assembly you're looking at.There are 2 long bolts you'll need to remove to take the caliper off the vehicle. Don't remove the brake line or open the bleeder screw ( either of these moves will add to your work!! ) Insert a large flat blade screwdriver in between the rotor and outboard brake pad and pry away from the vehicle slightly to release the pads from the rotor. Slide caliper upwards and towards the back of the vehicle to separate from rotor. The pads will come in a full set ( all 4 pads for both side of the rear ) . Look at your replacement pads and determine if they have a retainer clip holding them in place or a compression clip. Remove outboard pad first then inboard. Match old pads to replacement pads. Inspect rotor for grooves and irregular surfaces - if any grooves or irregularity present, remove rotor and take to an auto parts store for refinishing.Compress caliper piston with kit and allow 5 minutes for pressure to bleed back into the master cylinder.install rotor if removed and wipe surfaces with brake clean. Install inboard then outboard pad and place caliper on rotor, then mount to vehicle. Install wheel, repeat procedure for drivers side, then PUMP BRAKE PEDAL 5 TIMES BEFORE TRYING TO DRIVE VEHICLE to set pads on rotors.

How do you change the front brakes?

The front brakes should be Disc, if it is you will need to remove the Caliper bolts, the upper and lower, and the Caliper will pull away from the rotor, depress the cylinder and the old brake pads will just pop out, replace the pads and postion the Caliper back on the rotor and tighten the upper and lower bolts, it is a very simple job.

How to change brake pads on a buick century?

Front brake pads are usually easy to do. Take only one side apart at a time. You will need a big C clamp along with other basic hand tools. After jacking the car up and using the proper safety stands remove the wheels. If you turn the steering wheel so you can get to the back of the brake calipers easier.  Now remove the two bolts that hold the calipers to the back of the wheel spindle and carefully take the calipers off. Remove the old pads, pay attention to what pad went where. Take the C clamp of slowly squeeze the piston the caliper in. Remove and replace the rotor at this time. Put the new pads in the calipers and replace the caliper and wheel. Make sure all bolts are tighten! Before trying to drive vehicle make sure you press the brake pedal many times. I hope this helps.

How do I change the rotors and brakes on my 1999 hyundai tiburon?

Steps to replace front brake rotors and pads:

Safley jack up vehicle.
support vehicle on safety stands
remove front wheels
Remove 2 bolts holding the caliper to the caliper support.
remove caliper
remove old brake pads
remove 2 bolts holding caliper support to the spindle
remove rotor, might need a good whack with a hammer to loosen rust bond, also might have a locking ring on one lug stud
sand any and all rust from wheel hub
apply a liberal coating of antisiezing compound.
replace rotor and one lug nut to hold rotor steady
replace caliper support
replace new brake pads making sure squeel sensors are on inside upper corner, also make sure to apply caliper grease to caliper slides and pad sliding surfaces push caliper piston back.
replace caliper
replace wheels and torque to specs
lower vehicle
pump pedal
road test listening for any noises.

PS. these are generic instructions that are very basic, performing a brake job is a very precise and careful job. remember this syetem is responcible for stoping your vehicle at 65mph. this is not a job to attemp if you do not have a good grasp of mechanical applications. One mistake could cause you your life or injurt to your persons or someone else. if you are not comfortable undertaking this task please consult a professional.

please feel free to ask any additional questions you might have.
