Check your owners man, lots of mini vans have this feature so children can't open the doors while the van is moving. It must be in park.

1999 mercury mystique, transmission will not shift out of park, I dont want to force it, key is in ignition, however theres almost no juice in the battery. Is this part of the problem?

I believe it is. There is a shifter interlock that goes from the ignition switch to the brake that locks the transmission in park until the brake pedal is depressed with the key on. Most all vehicles have an over ride that allows the interlock to be bypassed. If you have an owners manual, it will tell you how to do this.

What would prevent a 2005 jeep liberty from shifting out of park

this is a feature, on A/T cars. for vast years, !!!
my jeep is M/T and has no such thing, but A/T has this.
This feature, prevents starting in GEAR.
called park lock out, so the Audi lady can't drive over her kids, ( really sad huh?)

Called BTSI: by jeep.
this feature does, not stop starts/crankikng. unless, the shifter is not placed
in park or neutral. (this feature blocks cranking in any gear)

so i must guess, its in park, engine is running, right?
and your foot, is on the brake, and the brake lights do glow behind car, if not the park lock will stay locked.

if you need a schematic, i can send it.
some cars there is a park lock out bypass so you can drive
with no brake lights. (LOL)

the BTSI bypass is missing this feature, in 2006, unlike older cars.
a federal mandate that bypass removal.

check the brake light fuses first of brake lights are dead.
the post back for schematic.
the FSM covers how to fix this on all cars made, (usa car, and forum)
The OEM "factory service manual" buy one and end guessing.
or login to alldata.com

so does the starter work or not in park or neutral.
this i can not guess from your post. at all.

no starts
no cranks
fails to stay running, engine.
what?
if the key will not crank the engine in park , then try cranking
in Neutral,(this trick uses fresh PRNDL contacts)
if the engine will not crank use jumper cable ump starts from a running donor car, (read paper sheet in cable box, it tells how )

if the car now cranks and starts jumped, that means the battery
was (is) discharged, that can be caused by phantom drains.
all tests are easy, and all take only a 10$ walfart DMM meter.
to find true cause , ask.

try posting what step fails in the operator guide , how to start your engine.
shift to park.
foot on brake,
turn key to crank, does this fail?

Car won't shift out of park

Look on the console around the shift lever to see if there is a button marked Shift Lock or Shift Release. Push this button while trying to shift.

When I turn the ignition switch to start the vehicle I often cannot shift the stick shift out of Park. If I immediately try to switch gears after starting the engine it usually works but if I leave it more...

ok the safety feature on an auto gearbox is that the gear select has a solinoid lock on the shift & you norm have to start engine first before you can select drive now if the engine is running & not allowing you to select a drive then for some reason the solinoid is losing its signal or going faulty or even the shaft needing a little lube IE: wd40 now my volvo won't even allow me to take the key out untill its in park hope this helps

Stuck in park

There is a shift lockout on some models which requires your foot to be on the brake when you want to shift from Park. Often you will find that the brakelights do not work when this part malfunctions.

The troubled part was suppose to insure that you would not have a runaway vehicle when the truck was started. Makers used a combination of ideas to prevent runaways. Most common was a starter interrupt to prevent the engine from cranking unless your foot was on the brake. Then newer models required that your foot be on the brakes to shift the running vehicle.

If you lose the signal, some engines will not crank and others will not shift from Park. The idea being that in Park the vehicle is locked out from moving. Check the upper brake pedal lever for this switch.

Shift lock camry

say again? and no year, what a waste that.....
is engine running,
is key in igntion, where is it, off , on?
is foot on brake pedal
slips to where? try to be exact.
slips to reverse, or neutral? or????
first off, park lock freezes the shifter in to park, until brakes are applied.
so my guess, is ,sigh.
you step on brake, start car, and the shifter falls to neutral
it cant fall to nothing, only, PRNDL (&2)
some cars have a park button on the shifter that locks you in park
this can fail, its just a simple lock in the handle.

Shifter stuck in park

Are the brake lights working, the safety lock on the gearshift is operated by the brake lights, if they don't work you can't get it out of park. Sequence is turn on ignition, put foot on foot brake (brake lights come on, park lock disengages). Check the brake light fuse.

Shift lever will not move out of park. Engine is running, seat belt fastened, parking brake released, all doors hood and trunk closed, foot firmly on brake pedal. When the button on the side of the shifter...

you should hear a click from the solenoid when you apply the brakes. If your brake lights don't work, your shift lock release won't either. There is a bypass method for emergencies in your owner manual. Check fuse for brake lights. And switch on brake pedal

My 2004 honda element shifter wont move from the park position

There are systems to prevent accidentally removing from park.

The key must be on. Sometimes this is a mechanically linked lock, sometimes electrically operated.

Newer cars usually have to be running, and your foot needs to be on the brake. With the engine running, you should hear a quite "thunk" from the transmission area when you put your foot on the brake pedal.

If you are pulling on the shifter while you put your foot on the brake, the actuator will not be able to overcome the friction your pull on the shifter causes.

It is possible that friction in the selector parts is causing the same thing. With the engine running and your foot on the brake, try pushing the shifter farther into Park to see if the actuator will let go.

If it does not feel like you are running into a lockout, sometimes transmissions are just a little stiff to get out of park, especially iof the vehicle is on a front to rear incline, causing it to try to roll against the parking pin.
