1999 Chevy Malibu 2.4L. Ran fine, changed the water pump but did not replace the timing chain. I did not move the the cams or crank during the install of the water pump. Prior to the repair I disconnected the battery, negitive side. I unpluged the O2 sensors and the ignition pack. Everyting went back together as is should. When I went to start the car I could hear the fuel pump start, the engin would crank but it does not appear to be getting any spark.

You can rotate the cam/crank into a positon that will not move as you remove the old belt, as long as the new belt places the cam/crank in same position as the old belt had them, it don't matter where the timing marks are. Leave your old belt on, rotate to a position that will not move or have tension on belt, (no matter the marks) and replace the belt. Make sure to recheck timing marks after new belt is installed by rotating the crank/cam back to timing marks, or just trust that the belt was replaced without the cam or crank rotated. Easy off, easy on, just make sure the cam/crank are still in time as the old belt had them located. NOTE: timing marks are there in case of a broke belt, or for a car that has jumped time. As long as cam and crank are held in same positon, and car was in time before the procedure, it don't matter where the timing marks are at during belt replacement.
Its the same as a chevy v8 pull radeator fan water pump lower crank pully loosen oil pan bolts align timing marks crank mark at 12 oclock cam cshaft mark at 6 oclock replace with new gears and chain timing cover gasket crank seal and water pump gaskets
your water pump is driven off of timing chain,it will be on back side of timing cover toward firewall down toward bottom. you have to remove timing cover and chain to replace pump
water pump is no big deal ,thermostat that a bigger job there not mush room to work but why the timming chain were i work the owner got a taxi fleet all maliby from 200 to 2003 i never say in my mechanical career or needed to change a timing chain on a malibe those years some of malibu has close to 600,000km change a lot of intake gasket but timing chain never please tell why the shop whant to change the timing chain do you now the shop good thanks pierre
That engine does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain and therefore much easier to work with as it can only go on a certain way, the primary focus being getting the dots on the timing chain sprockets lined up properly.
I believe, with the engine at Top Dead Center on cylinder #1, the dots will be facing each other. That is to say, the do on the cam sprocket will be facing the dot on the crank sprocket.
bring the piston no 1 on the top position check the cam shaft si moving freelyon the outer side of the shaft there are 2 gear with 14mm bolts and 1 extra whole, put a long bolt in the empty space and try to turnthe engine the bolt will go further in the space than the timming is set put the chain on that should do
