Replaced intake on 88 oldsmobile cutlass. now running rough

I just replaced the intake. i didnt have to remove the distributor at all so i know its not out of time. it has a valley pan gasket. a quadrajet carb and i believe its either a 307 or a 350. it also started ticking a little from one of the heads.

its also blowing smoke from the breather

  • Anonymous Mar 18, 2010

its idleing extremely rough and blowing smoke from the breather on the side of the valve cover. it wasnt doing this before i replaced the intake and gasket.sometimes it doesnt even want to stay running and i have to gas it a little to keep it alive. and now i hear a tick that wasnt there before either. before i changed the intake all i had was a leak, now it seems a lot worse

Ticking means timing is off. Or possibly you havent torqued the manifold on properly. 18 Ft-Lbs torque

Need to see a image of how plug wires go on a 1992 oldsmobile 88 royale

Intake manifold normally has firing order cast in, or get a shop manual. The hard part can be finding which should be #1, especially if you have had the distributor removed. Use compression gauge to find TDC compression stroke on #1 and see where rotor is pointing.

My 1990 oldsmobile cutlass ciera wont start at all and its not showing a code

Sounds like your coolant temp sensor went bad, it is in or around gooseneck /intake area 2 wire plug yellow/brown if I remember right this regulates fuel according to temperature so basiclly it tells ecm how much fuel to send to throttle body for how cold it is out. these go bad and cause a -40 *F which pours raw fuel down intake thus flooding,

Can a bad intake gasket cause my car not to run or run rough

Yes. If it is leaking, the engine is not getting enough air intake. It's the same as disconnecting the PCV valve.
